Rene, just a suggestion. Homeless people need socks. See if you can donate them to a shelter or thrift store that helps homeless people. Anything warm would help them. Socks, long pants, warm shirts, jackets, comforters blankets, towels. If you get personal items they could use those too. Male & Female. Sometimes the kids are involved. This beats throwing them away and the recipients will be forever greatful. 😊

I usually do end up donating a large portion of the clothing. For toiletries, if they have been opened/half full or not still sealed in their packaging (such as the opened bag of diapers), I don't donate them. Not saying anyone is going to dump something weird in half a used bottle of rubbing alcohol, but better safe than sorry, I think!

I think used socks are not donated due to hygiene issues. Everyone deserves their very own new pack of socks. Just get an extra pack from your shopping and drop it off.

@@PaperandMoose not sure if you covered this question before. We all know that you are not legally obligated to return money to the previous owner of the storage unit. However I'm wondering if you like to discuss what are the moral considerations for not only returning money but other things of value, like clothing? You may have $1,200 worth of clothing, the original cost is what I'm talking about. Does anyone ever discuss the loss people suffer? It's all a sad topic. My brother I'm sure it's been well over $100,000 on storage stuff he never sees.

If you can't pay your bill at a unit,and it's sold,other than photos,meds,and some paperwork it's gone,sad but true,and some people rent a unit fill it and have no intention of ever getting the stuff back

@@LuckyGuu we have a couple people in our area who clean out estates, take what they want and leave the rest of the estate in storage lockers after renting for the free month. Anything after what is owed in back fees is supposed to be given to the original tenants of the locker

Sox are the number one item requested by people without homes who sleep on the street. Just a hint to everyone if you have some and no, it doesn’t matter if they match. Great about the found money, sold diapers etc. enjoyed this storage unit immensely!

Put the money in a light Clorox solution. Dry on some old towels or toss on the dryer for 5 min.

Well, you could see it from another perspective - haven't you stored things in your basement, attic or garage, believing you're gonna need these things in the future, but then time goes on and before you know it several decades had gone by, and you had never at any point given any thought to the stuff you put away so many years ago, unless it was in your way because you needed the space to store new stuff you also never gonna use again! I know I have. lol

@@jrand2631 sure, but if I look around and realize I can’t have friends visit because there’s no room left to sit down, then I am a hoarder, with an emotional/mental issue. If you’re garage or basement is packed full of items with no liquid value, that your family will be burdened by when you abandon it, then maybe spend some time and energy donating to local schools, artists, recycle places…Free if you pick up ads on Facebook marketplace? Sometimes the odd junk that we “store” for some future use IS actually valuable and easy to sell on eBay! It’s like treasure hunting just cleaning out and simplifying one’s life. Recommend

It was! Besides that one bag that must have had the damp towels in it, it didn't have the usual storage odor at all. Made it more pleasant to clean out!

That wet smell is from standing moisture in the air when the items were packed. Plastic bags hold in the moisture. Hit days make that moisture steam up and cold days makes it condense. Then it gets raunchy over time.
