That dream car of Bruce Hudson could not have landed in better hands…another man who appreciates that incredible car as Bruce did. Watching this brings me to tears as I can imagine my layers Brother John - who would have been 21 at the time Bruce left this earth - would likely have been fast friends with Bruce…same age…both motorcycle enthusiasts…and both with the love of muscle cars and the dream to head west. John had a 1969 Chevelle SS and a Suziki street bike…and traveled west on his bike twice - from Dayton, Ohio. What an enduring tribute to Bruce Hudson. Cheers to you Bruce! ♥

Thanks kindly; we appreciate your feedback. Yeah, I've often pictured myself traveling across the country in Bruce's '74 Challenger...and how much fun that would have been. And of course we know that Bruce and his shipmate on the Fitz were going to do just that...hop in his Challenger and head straight for the west coast as soon as they got off the Fitz. Sadly, they just didn't make it. Thanks for your interest! HMM

Believe me, Bruce's Challenger is in great hands and his memory lives on. Dave (current owner) stumbled upon the car more than a decade ago when the previous owner asked him for his help in its disassembly to make (engine) modifications. Dave quickly pointed of the importance (and value) of keeping the Challenger as Bruce left it and the disassembly / major modifications never happened. While the two were friends, I would guess the previous owner sensed Dave's love and appreciation for the car because when he was ready to sell, Dave was the person he called. The car is amazing..... not restored, but well preserved, just like Bruce Hudson's memory.

Can you imagine being 22 years old and owning a great car like this? The 70's were the best time to be a young person, in my opinion. I was 14 years old on November 10, 1975 and I would have loved to have gotten a ride in a cherry car like this! Even the Zippo lighter takes me back. Man, those really were great times. I'm so sorry for the loss of Bruce and other men on the Fitz.

Just starting in his adult life, making darned good money for a 22 year-old man and with a still-new 340 Challenger….road-trip planned with his buddies once the run was over, and a little one on the way. Life was pretty good for Bruce Hudson….up until that storm hit on the 10th. Makes one wonder what the stories were with the other men aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald(we know of Capt. McSorley’s intentions to care for his wife)…..Don, thank you for bringing a piece of the men’s lives to light. A big thanks to the men who have cared for Bruce’s Challenger in the decades since his untimely demise…

Bruce sure was doing well for himself at the time of his unfortunate demise. The economic troubles for many families impacted by the recession of at that time had greatly impacted many small towns, communities, and businesses in the Great Lakes area. Good paying jobs we’re far and few between for young men with no real experience at any skilled trade in their lives yet. So glad I stumbled across this post. Though I didn’t learn much about history in school due to my bad choices back then, I’ve developed a real fascination for real life stories surrounding a historical event. Thanks to all for sharing their experiences and findings pertaining to this awesome real life story.

Anderson the night she went down, I was shocked and asked tons of questions, I am from California, and had moved to Duluth,, MN and I had heard the song in the 80's when I was a kid and that song got a hold of me, the first time I stood on the edge of Lake Superior, it was May, and the wind was cold and strong, the waves were kicking up, I walked to the Marine Museum and they have a model of the Fitz as it looks on the flood of the lake, your video is spine chilling, you got to ride in Bruce's car, now THAT is cool, btw, I loved the old muscle cars, but that one? I loved this documentary. Great history through the eyes of a man who not only owns a car of one of the men who died on the Fitzgerald, but is very respectful of both the late owner, the family, as well as the car. The Hudson family couldn't have asked for a better caretaker for Bruce's car. I am really sad that this young man had his whole future in front of him, a nice , well-paying job, money in his pocket where he could buy a nice car, he had plans to go on a cross country road trip with his friends, and he and his girlfriend were expecting and his life was snuffed out because his ship sank in a storm. So heartbreaking. ❤

1973 was the last year that the 340 was available. It was replaced by the 360 in 1974. The fender tag on this car has E44 engine code on it, which means it’s a 318 2-barrel car.. The VIN is not as clear in the video, but it must be JH23G4, again G for 318. What is clear, is it didn’t leave the factory with a 340 between the fenders.

I lived in Ashtabula when that happened to the Edmond Fitzgerald and it was saddening, I turned 17 in Nov of 1975. I remember seeing the Edmond Fitzgerald in the Ashtabula Harbor port off of Lake Erie a few times, it was huge! I lived a block away from the port.

When I was in middle school around 1991 -1992 the music teacher had the (The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald) song lyrics typed on paper and gave everyone as copy to read while we listened ( the lesson was on Folk music/storytelling music.) We went line by line over the course of a few weeks and learned about the sinking and loss of the ship and crew.
