In the "Get Back" docu-series, Paul McCartney wonders aloud if "Peter has the original" tape - leaving fans thirsting over the prospect of potentially even more lost Beatles music. In an exclusive interview with 'Almost Beatles Songs,' Peter Asher answers this decades-long riddle and shares his experience during the great lost McCartney session of December 1965.

As an amateur songwriter I'm always amazed by McCartney he could literally fall down the stairs with a guitar in his hand and write a song that would put most of us to shame (and the screams would be better too 🤣)

That´s because it´s all BS. Take the song A World Without Love, for example. It was most likely written by Mitch Murray. Listen to How Do You Do It and compare it with I´ll Be On My Way, A World Without Love and I´m Telling You Now, by Freddy and the Dreamers, written by Mitch Murray. It´s basically the same song with different lyrics. Paul McCartney is no genius.

I always loved this song. Really, anything Paul wrote for others. But especially for Peter and Gordon! This song must have been so special to Jane not only for it to be written for her by Paul, but for Paul to have given it to her brother to sing and have a hit. Paul always was a very family kind of guy.

I think he and Peter remained friendly even after his sister dumped him. Which would be awkward I think but eh, lol 😂
@charwest9449
@charwest9449 Жыл бұрын
@@thesilvershining I know, right? It's so nice that they could stay friends. Or at least friendly. Seeing this I realize how much Paul wanted it to work out between him and Jane. She really was his first full flat out love. But I wonder how much of that was the whole family situation too -- Paul loving being a part of a close-knit working intellectual family. It must have been like a dream come true! But, it seemed that out on their own, trying to cobble together a life just the two of them, he and Jane were just too far apart. He just couldn't be the kind of guy she needed him to be, unless she was right there with him. He wasn't the guy who could make it work with his wife gone for months at a time. He had too much stress in his own life, too many temptations, too many women absolutely throwing themselves at him. (I wonder if that was one of the reasons Paul seemed so conflicted about Yoko gluing herself to John, despite how destructive he could see her behavior was to his ability to write with John, and to the cohesiveness of the group? What Paul may not have quite realized was that Yoko glued herself to John not just for love, but for fame. Unlike Jane who truly had her own career, Yoko to have a real career needed to wrest John away from The Beatles to work on HER things. Such a thing would never have even occurred to Jane. She didn't need Paul. She truly had her own career.) But Paul did find Linda, and Jane found someone else and had a very nice life. I guess that made things easier for Peter and Paul, lol. I think Peter stayed quite active in the music industry, Paul's circles even.

Paul's gift for writing songs (on his own and in collaboration with co writers) for other artists is something which is often overlooked. "Nobody I Know" was the big hit he penned for Peter and Gordon mid 1960s. In that decade he also wrote songs for Cilla Black, Cliff Richard, PJ Proby and Mary Hopkin. Along with lyricist Tim Rice he wrote a song called Hot As Sun which was recorded by Elaine Paige a couple of decades later. In the early 1960s there was a stream of songs for other artists but I'm not sure if he's done it recently. Btw he's playing drums on The Ballad of John and Yoko.

Nillson's debut album, in 1966 entitled "Spotlight on Nilsson", was a compilation album that contained singles he released from 1964 - 1966. Half of the songs are written by Nillson, and half are covers written by others, including "16 Tons" by Merle Travis. Nillson's second album containing another 5 self penned songs was 2 years later, 1967's "Pandemonium Shadow Show". It actually also included 2 Beatles songs, "You Can't Do That" and "She's Leaving Home". Like a lot of artists at the time, he was likely very influenced by Lennon-McCartney. The album also contained the controversial song "Cuddly Toy" that he gave to the Monkees for release.

@@stephenjones101 interesting how even for really excellent writer/performers like Nilsson, they'd be lucky to break through with even a one or two really big hits. All the more amazing how Paul was just able to churn them out -- and give a bunch away, which also became hits. Why did Nilsson give his song to the Monkees? Maybe he needed to find a group. And of course, Nilsson was hanging around with Lennon in L.A. around 1974. You'd think something could have blossomed from that. But maybe neither of them was really in the right head space.

Jane and Paul were BEAUTIFUL together...as were ALL the songs that she inspired in him!

It would never have worked for them though. Jane was a serious actress and had been away touring for five months when she returned and found another woman at Paul’s house, whereas Linda and Paul were apart for only one night. I’m glad Paul and Jane were able to remain friends.

Just the ending alone proves the released version was highly orchestrated and professionally produced... as I listened to it reading comic books with a mouthful of bubble gum (at that time).

It could be possible with technology the way it is. They have AI that can imitate a persons speaking voice after only hearing seconds of it. Why not someone singing?

Paul was actually helpful in giving Jimmy Nicol tips on drumming to Beatles songs when Jimmy had to sub for the ailing Ringo. Somewhere I have seen a picture of him on drums back then.

Such a great song. Paul's fingerprints are all over it. He most certainly could've been playing drums. If he could play on the ballad of John and Yoko, he can absolutely handle this song. Also, love all the amazing pictures.

paul's version sounds so much more timeless and personal. Their producer should have thought less short term, because what was just a minor hit that lost all relevancy as soon as the decade ended, could have been a hidden gem and that got much more love as it got older.
