The steel pipe will last for many years. For what it's worth, I worked on drainage related issues for over 45 years, and I would recommend adding some sort of headwall at the inlet (and outlet, even though it should be considered secondary to the inlet) and leave a slight sump over the steel pipe that you might one day pour with concrete to act as a hard surface for an overflow (stream ford). An overflow will occur, and a hard surface cap will help with loss of the backfill and reduce future maintenance work. This would be a minimum to substantially reduce costs for maintenance and labor. A long-term solution would be a much larger pipe sized for future potential flows and substantial headwalls with integral toe-walls to all but eliminate erosion except in a very unusual rain event such as a 500-year flood. Approaches to the stream would also need to be raised to maintain the structure. But cost would be substantially higher for this more permanent fix. Personally, I would not go to that expense unless you have the means. Your current pipe replacement is much better than the previous pipe. Thanks.

Great advice. Should I put some bigger rock at the inlet and some around the outlet?

That culvert is a great find! Glad you were able to repurpose it. I've noticed lately how really good and healthy your bison look! I also see consistent improvement-refinement in your handling of them and how curious and willing and docile they stay with you. Wondering if you notice the calves becoming more docile as their mom's have also over a few years.

I had to laugh Dusty, when you were talking about what some animals would eat…I used to have a small herd of mountain goats on my little ranch years ago. I once came home to find that they had eaten part of my Weber grill. The rest of it was scattered. Big Billy was like Dennis The Menace when I wasn’t home. The memories and stories I have…🫣🤣🤣🤣
@Bearsgypsy118 күн бұрын
🇮🇪☘️🇺🇸 that’s proper ranching most surely!!! And that’s such a perfect example of loving American family working hard together to make things work… Cows are fed magnets to keep the wire etc they swallow that they find in the pastures in the 1st stomachs & in one spot. I’ve seen softball sized balls weighing 5-7lbs taken out of cows guts …

Marissa, you're a hoot. 😆 Dusty, kicking around the hay is a good idea. Spreading a good layer of hay between the rows of your flower/vegetable garden will help hold in moisture during dry spells. It also inhibits weed growth. Your fields get those cracks in it when you are in a dry spell. Too bad you don't have enough hay to cover the problem areas. You have too much land. 😊 You can use newspapers between the rows in the garden, but not in a field.
@janepipkin813916 күн бұрын

According to Greg Judy, unrolling the hay backward is the best. It scatters and covers a larger area. It also works better if you go at a higher speed.
