Thumbs up to you Jay for admitting your mistake and filming the correction, most people would just fix it and not mention it, that’s the reason I enjoy your videos so much, you just being completely honest with your subscribers. Keep the great videos coming.

I 100% agree with your comment. One of the reasons I watch his channel is because of how real it is. A non carpenter would probably do this. I'm an electrician by trade and probably would make the same mistake with the stud length.

For those of us who have done construction work, we are sitting here watching saying, just kick it in place, or shave some off here and there. The beauty of wood is that you can always make it work. Nice job and you learned so much!

Hey Jay! Those double studs you put in for your corner. You either have to put a third stud in on the side of the second you put in or turn the one you put in 90 degrees. It will just make it so you have something to nail to in your corner when doing the inside. You’re doing a great job Jay. Remember, if at first you don’t succeed, keep trying till you do. We all learn by our mistakes and by doing. I love your drone footage. You have a beautiful backyard!

Only recently given up his full time job, so many channels give up their job early then ebeg constantly, guilt tripping their audience. Not jay! I admire that! I can’t tell you how many channels I’ve stopped watching from a whole variety of topics because of constant ebegging, guilt tips, sponsors that are done just because, instead of a real decision. Another was people in extremely high paying jobs, doctors, lawyers, psychiatric professors constantly wanting people to pay for patreon, send money this way & that. I’m talking about big channels where yt gives them plenty revenue too. A camping channel just popped in my head, I watched him many years ago, he got to the point that all he did was boast what companies had sent him free. He’d ‘review’ products with an always amazing review, I noticed in the comments people with far more knowledge than I have saying they were rubbish products and pointing out why, asking him why he was encouraging people to buy expensive items that were poor quality or didn’t work for the task they were deigned or you could buy better things cheaper. All he seemed to do was unpack items…I was done with that, but I’ve watched jay for years and I like his videos and always have 😁

This is why computer models of existing structures plus the remodel catch problems like this. 😆 You da man, Jay! ❤You also discovered why screws are useful too. I can hardly wait for you to realize the floor height difference was important. The double stud at the end is a good idea...it maybe should have been a California corner for more insulation. Your lumber looks pretty good. Glad dimensional was actually dimensional.

I know your excited about your windows, buy on our first cabin build the biggest mistake we made was getting too excited about windows and putting them in as soon as the walls were up. It did not take long to progress to where we were faced with gaving to take the windows out to allow for more structure to be completed. We were dealing with triple panes that once installed are there permanently and not meant to be taken out and put back in. We were lucky and only list the hermetic seal on one window. We also learned that your warrant is not good if the window fails once it was installed and is subsequently removed. Get your roof up, even if this means a second floor if you are doing that. Interior framing, running joists and beams and so on. Exterior sheathing, wrap and all thst needs to be in place. Everything you do, pretty much until you ready to put in insulation, changes the window formity/deformity, do you dont want to install windows and by the same account exterior doors, until you are sealed and buttoned up need the windows and doors to keep out elements that might cause problem withvyor dry insulation that needs to stay dry. The documentation and installation requirements that you get with the windows should outline this but believe me its easy to miss when you just want to see those sparkling windows in. Actually, the contractor that built our main home filled the windows in with plywood sheets until there was nothing much left to do except Exterior frames around the windiws and interior window trim and sills. The exterior door went in somewhat before that so we could heat the space but not until the ceiling was up. This especially important when you want a good thermal seal. We actually used his method regardjng windows on our latest cabin noryh of Anchorage and it has turned out to be the best thermatically to date. We were not even getting drafts even before final sealing was done, and even in the worst wind storms, when, as ecpected walls may flexva bit, there us no window rattle which means the windows are well integrated into the structure abd moves with it. Same was the case when we experienced a 4+ earthquake. Unless the doors you put in are all glass, not a great idea I woukd think in a cold weather enviroment the only reason many builder insist on waiting until the celing joust and beams are up as you sre installing into an opening which at that point is not going to deform in anyway that will change how well/tightly its installed.

Love it! You had me hooked back in the "building a little tent in a big tent" days, and over time your channel has risen to the #1 subscription for me. Growing up in northern BC, I remember working outside and thinking -10 was balmy, -20 you started to feel it, and then -25 and colder it really got interesting. As long as I could keep my fingers and toes reasonably warm (and my face when it got really cold), it was all good. Not sure if I could do it again now, but the cooking, building, the ice-roads, the "squeakiness" in the cold - all brings back great memories - great videos every week :-).
