I’m guessing they accelerated the first Seldon Crisis to keep the main characters young & they apparently want the audience to think that Salvor Hardin is Gaal Dornick’s kid that got put in the embryo bank back in episode 2, otherwise why bring out the magic math crystal? The Empire storyline keeps being interesting. I really do hope they don’t get too attached to any of the Terminus cast - the time jumps for the various crises should preclude that. I really, really hope they don’t go the route of making all the prominent characters descendants of Gaal Dornick - that’d be a mistake IMO. Psychohistory is supposed to be a way to predict the behavior of large groups of people over time, not plan out the lives a special family of special people to be in the right place at the right time.

This is fairly interesting in its own right, but definitely it's "Foundation" in only the loosest sense. I always liked Salvor the most in the books, because he was a thinker. I think the most important thing is that they don't miss the point of the books. I can understand trying to meet quotas for action to keep people unfamiliar with the books coming back for more, but it can't be to the detriment of the purpose of the books. I actually really like the idea of cloning the emperor, it adds that scifi show weirdness that audiences want, but it also STRONGLY plays into the theme of stagnation that destroyed the empire in the first place. The attack on the space elevator also digs into the idea of a culture that is dying from within, while providing some action for the casual viewers. If they can continue to put details like these in while avoiding superflous scifi tropes, they could keep this a decent show.

Also, if you remember Hardin’s multiple speeches that conclude that “violence is the last refuge of the incompetent”… yet in this episode, hardins first response was (something like) “let’s see how much violence we can muster”. I wonder if they will keep the clever tricks/tactics/strategies that got the people in the book out of their crises, or if it will all be unrelated. The reason I don’t like then being mentalics is that that’s the whole purpose of the second foundation. The whole series could show she the ultimate one who f*cks up humanity. Why wouldn't she create more copies of herself as well? All that metal mechanics inside her seem very old school. No updates? No synth-bio robot? Cyborgs? And in the original books Demerzel was a guy working both sides. There was also a robot Seldon got busy with. Will she come up later? Is it Demerzel? Demerzel is also supposed to have psychic abilities that can influence humans. Brother Night just before he is zapped into heaven senses something is wrong with the new Brother Dawn. Did he know somehow that it was an genetically altered clone? Did Demerzel? She then reassures him with her hypnotic song and says "All is fine." as she give him a gentle push forward to the king-zapper. Was she using her robot-psycho power? Are there other robots hidden behind the scenes pulling strings that the robot sympathisers saved? Is Salvor Hardin ("hard-on"?) actually Gaal Dornik and Ranch Foss' daughter? Gaal was supposed to lead Terminus and open the vault. Yet Salvor has the same abilities. Does she have the genetic key to do so? And why is Raych so good at math when he came from the Sinks? He seems to have had his character merge with another Hari found who was good with math in the Sinks. Gaal also travels to Synax. The trip is supposed to take decades. Will she meet her daughter Salvor, or her granddaughter? What if she met and fell in love with her grandson without knowing it? Or will she be the on to defeat the Mule in the future? I wonder...

It's okay to take liberties with a work, even to change important things. But if that doesn't serve the story, or any story, but makes it worse, then what's the point? Thanks for the thorough review as always Quinn! To re-iterate on Gaal (SPOILERS), . . . . . . . . . . . I've seen some Reddit post talking about the possibility of Gaal being the result of merging Gaal Dornick and Wanda Seldon characters and I had the feeling that Gaal was behaving like Wanda in the books when Hari discovered that she was able to manipulate others decisions. So I think it makes sense that Raych (and he murdering Hari still leave a sour taste in my mouth but I suppose it was part of Hari's plan) sent her back to Trantor to be with the Second Foundation and actually continue to develop Psychohistory and make sure that the Plan unfolds correctly. Anyway the TV Shows is not doing badly which I'm happily surprised, let's hope it gets better and better 🤞🏼

I'll keep watching, but my expectations have become much lower. There's nothing wrong with changing a story in adaptation, but it needs to be an engaging story. Not sure they're doing that. It's curious, because they might actually have created a decent story, but it's hard to tell with the pace it runs. They seem more interested in making it last longer than making what they have interesting. Good stories make me care about most the characters. Decent stories make me care about some of them. This story? Not so much. There are not many stories where i can say this, but I'm not sure they can create real suspense with these characters. If any of them are put into a life-or-death situation, I can't say I'd care about what happens to a single one of them. If I weren't interested in seeing what they've done to Asimov's books, I'm not sure I'd stay with it.
@lorensims48463 жыл бұрын
I'm concerned they're so interested with following the fall of the Empire. That Star Bridge really bugs me. Sure, this is grander and more elaborate than any space elevator idea I've seen before, but it has always been assumed that we could have something within the next hundred years or so, not as a great Imperial achievement twelve thousand years in the future. It just feels pedestrian for such an Empire as this to me. The original stories focused on the Foundation and that's where my primary interest is. Thinking back, I feel the story, such as we've seen so far, moved along much faster and more coherently in the book.
@wesbrz3 жыл бұрын
@@lorensims4846 Well, understand, that the Foundation stories as Asimov originally wrote them, were a set of novellas, and later serialized novels, that were published sporadically in Astounding Science Fiction, in the 1940's. (I used to be a fairly avid collector, and have all the original magazines they were published in...) The Foundations themselves were the only unifying "characters" in all those stories. i don't think Asimov was much with character development, as much as idea development. The foundations may have been his most memorable "characters." This production is interesting in that it uses some familiar names and places and occasionally ideas, but it's largely telling its own story, trying to capitalize on Asimov's name, while making only an occasional nod to his actual work. I find it fun to hear familiar names mentioned; the story itself goes in its own direction, and does so, ever so slowly... If they moved as quickly as the books, they might almost tell the whole story in one season. They seem to be wanting to stretch the story out to allow for many seasons, but they're going to lose enough audience by the season's end, that I'm not sure they'll have more than one season, anyway...

@@nemo4evr Television is primarily a business, not a service to its viewers. To those who produce it, it is primarily a means to build and advance careers. I think we can see this clearly, in this case. The word "Asimov" is not a name to be respected, but a property to be bought and exploited. Again, I think that's clearly happening here; time will tell. What they're producing is very pretty, and might even provide an interesting story, though it seems only marginally related to what Asimov wrote. Whether their version of the story will be interesting is hard to see so far, as it unwinds sooooo sloooooowly. Do they seriously think that when they show Gaal swimming back and forth (andbackandforthandbackandforth), that we don't realize they're padding out the story? I recently re-read the first volume in the Foundation series a few decades after my first reading, but I've already found that it brings in a lot of stuff from both the prequels and sequels to the initial trilogy. I don't mind this series filling in a lot of back-story of various characters - and I even like some of the innovations (e.g. the genetic dynasty and keeping Gaal Dornick around to contribute to future story lines) since I see how they're going to make the series relatable to non-fans of Asimov and the Foundation series. The only thing that has me worried a bit is that the series may actually deliver on the core conceit of the Foundation series as a whole - namely that there are multiple layers of dark forces manipulating the lives of everyone in the story - even of those who are busy manipulating others even more "naïve" than themselves. There are already far too many people prone to spinning, believing and spreading conspiracy theories in our world today. May the creators of this series give us a more realistic picture of reality: pace Asimov, the world is ultimately a chaotic place whose future can't be predicted even in principle, whose complexity makes it acutely path dependent in response to all sorts of unobservable events and whose history is driven by snafu far more than by the grand plans of self-appointed philosopher kings.

Honestly to me the show is not doing it, it doesn't really feel like the Foundation. One issue I have is that they miss a lot of important stuff, for example they barely talk about the Encyclopedists, they just show a bunch of random people traveling with Seldon but never actually explain the audience who they are or why were they chosen. (spoilers ahead) I think explaining deeper who the Encyclopedists are is extremely important to understand the Foundation, these are very knowleadgeable people, and it is because of them that the Foundation flourishes later. All that amazing technology that they come up with later is built upon the selection of people that Seldon took with him, scientists, professors, etc. The series is waaay too worried explaining things about Gaal and Hardin, and they forget entirely to introduce you to the universe they inhabit. I understand that a series has more limited time, but there are things that you just can't afford to ignore.

I haven't yet read Hyperion, athough I've heard great things about it. They don't need to keep bringing in things from other sources to try to make this interesting. "Robot Wars" was ripped from Dune already. In Asimov's universe they simply fell out of favor. They seem to be combining the first two crises. I thought the Ascension thing was stupid. Empire clearly has a HUGE ego, such that he surrounds himself, with himself and believes that he is the best choice for leading the empire forever ... that sort of egomaniac isn't going to vaporize himself at the end, he's just gonna go to the old empire farm and play till he drops. Also I find it odd that lifespans are not greatly extended. Already we are developing the tech to extend our lifespans for decades and IMO within 50 years or so from now, indefinitely. So the aging process outwardly should just be halted in the future ... that doesn't change the notion though that you might want a younger brain to tackle new problems, so still plenty of room for a "changing of the guard" in the leadership arena. Overall the genetic dynasty idea is cool, but they seem have nothing else to really offer here ... I think if they are going to take liberties at all with the book, they should have brought in some science-minded futurists to give some guidance, ideas, & imagination to the process.

imagine seeing all you past decisions and judging yourself and adjusting. in this episode the emperor clones have different interests and pursuits. seeing the painting and seeing something that tells you to remove it. i got from this episode that this emperor did not like or dislike the painting but that a message for all future emperors was sent with this action. the message is that things change and not to be stagnant. stagnant was on of the reason for the fall.

Honestly, I’m really enjoying this as as a piece of science fiction, but it’s starting to worry me how little it feels like Foundation. Also if they could stop making the protagonists female purely so that men can have sex with them, I’d really appreciate that.
