Great video, looks like an sleek setup. Does it make any sense to import the same wallet on more than one signing device? For example I was thinking to setup access to the same wallet via a mobile device like Foundation and a desktop like Trezor suite. Mainly for flexibility. Anyway thanks for the great content.

Hey there - appreciate the kind words! And it most certainly does make sense if you'd like to be able to view your balance or receive bitcoin to the same wallet through different types of interfaces (e.g. mobile and desktop as you said). Ultimately the ability to spend is still controlled by the hardware device itself, so you can import the hardware wallet into as many software interfaces as you'd like.

Hi Ian, was wondering what are the primary HWWs you use? Also what bitcoin only hardware wallets would you recomend for a 3/5 multisig, there are so many options.

I personally use ColdCard and Foundation Passport for the most part. Blockstream Jade is another great device and has a more affordable price point which makes it an excellent addition (or additions) to a multisig quorum

Holy shit! That is one slick set up. The UX and UI is a big improvement over others in the BTC only realm. I currently use a Coldcard combo but I can 100% see this as my go to for a secondary or tertiary stack. This would be the perfect Xmas gift for a new stacker! Really like this mate!

What if phone has a virus and you’re transferring sd card to Passport?

Haven’t seen that happen and I don’t have enough info to comment on what the probability could be of such an attack. At the end of the day you’re trying to reduce the number of threats and possible attacks which a microSD card definitely achieves vs. a wired connection. To reduce fully to zero, you’ll need to go be a monk in a cave…

FYI, I picked up a Foundation passport batch 2 and connected it with Envoy. Love it! I've got other HW's but this is now my favorite by far.

That is awesome to hear sir! The pairing with Envoy really does make it a clean experience - I expect this to become a standard going forward for leading hardware devices

Good question - I'm still using my original which is since this video was made! That being said, given that this is one of the devices I use for my long-term BTC savings, I'm not using it often.

What do you prefer more foundation passport or cold card mk4?

Fine's out here asking the tough questions 😅 I personally split my cold storage stack across those two devices currently, and I think there's a good argument to be made about vendor diversification even though both of these (and esp. Coinkite) have solid reputations and are open-source. So "both" is my cop out answer :) If forced to choose between the two today though, I'd probably give the nod to Passport but mostly due to personal preference in having QR codes available for PSBTs. Core security features are comparable across both, and I just think Passport is slightly more user-friendly esp. now with the accompanying mobile app. Who knows though - I also see NFC becoming a bigger thing as time goes on and Coldcard is clearly the leader on that feature currently.

Great tutorial, Ian! I can’t see the amount on sparrow, that I can see on envoy. It’s the same wallet/seed/passphrase/derivation. However, there’s a transaction history on sparrow, yet the amount is still $0. Any idea why that is? Also, do you think having just a mobile wallet like envoy is enough for cold storage? Do you think a desktop wallet is necessary?
@IanMajor
@IanMajor 10 ай бұрын
Are you by chance trying to connect your own node to Sparrow? It sounds like it’s having an issue fetching information from the blockchain to display your UTXOs and balance. Sometimes I’ve also seen closing and reopening the wallet work to sync it? In this setup w/ the Passport, neither Envoy nor Sparrow would have the private key which stays on the Passport device. They’re merely serving as a “companion app” to pair with the hardware device and display your balances and broadcast transaction data to the network. So in that sense, the choice of pairing the Passport with Envoy vs. Sparrow is more up to your preference and which one you like better. From a security standpoint, the main imperative is keeping your Passport seed phrase safe and avoiding putting it on an internet connected device.

@@IanMajor yes! Wow Youre right! I am in the middle of connecting my node, not even completely synced yet LOL, guess I'll wait til then. thank you for that! How do you feel about passport having the seedphrase 'viewable' within the device itself? Seem like if someone steals the passport and can crack the pin number, they'll just have easy access to the seeds and the eventually the funds. Is there a way to hide the seeds in passport, so that they are not viewable? I'm not sure if you've covered this before, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
@IanMajor
@IanMajor 10 ай бұрын
Cool yes that should be it then - once it syncs see if the issue persists. That's a good point and I'm not aware of a way to make the seed not viewable. I think that's fairly common across most hardware wallets too and until now I really haven't thought super deeply about it haha. I suppose if you're really concerned you can just destroy the seed on the device (obviously first ensuring you have the seed phrase safely written down / backed up elsewhere) and then when you want to send funds, you can restore the seed to the device and only keep the seed "on the device" when you need to actually use it (which if it's for long-term savings maybe it's that frequently).

@@shadowthegreat4304 Thanks for jumping in! That's right and I should have highlighted it in the video. If you do need coin control in the interim Cole, you could pair Passport up with a desktop wallet like Sparrow instead.
