The crumbling foundation wall under the porch would have caused most people to panic and do a complete tear-out and rebuild. It's "no big deal" to you, just like a dentist, you remove the bad stuff and patch it with rocks from along the road. Thanks for documenting your masonry craft to show the younger generation how to do this stuff if they would just put down the phone and pick up a tool.

Indian who learned to repair Gargoyles on buildings in Portland, Oregon 100 years ago .. then he got into plastering and cement work moving the family across the country repeatedly always doing whatever work they could find .. I listened to him and do it like he and you do ALSO building entire homes myself .. "no big deal" aka the family gets to eat tonight and stay together a little longer as they grow up

I'm in Pennsylvania also. It's amazing how the freeze/thaw cycle of water will destroy concrete block and walls over time. It's been difficult to find the process of actual repairs, but I know that regional differences will alter the recipe of mortar and cement because of the soil types, temperature, climate, etc. It's great also have the historical way of doing things presented. Newer isn't always better, and a lot of castles are still standing in Europe. :)

Hello Mike. I have learn so much from your videos and lost the fear of doing some work myself. Thank you veru much for your videos, they are so useful you can't imagine. Lately, I bought a house with one of my sons where he will live and start a business. We live in Quebec, about 35 miles east from Montreal. This house was built back in 1975. One of the previous owners put 4" thick polystyrene ouside of the basement walls. Inside the basement there is a 1/2" thick inch white polystyrene against the exterior walls and then just drywall installed on 2x2 frame. The basement is pretty cold in winter and quite humid in summer. We measured 65% relative humidity on the surface of the walls and floor. Luckily there are no cracks, leaks or mold inside but we want to watereproof it to make it more livable, but the concrete seems very porous and fills very humid. We are planning to rip all the drywall and white polystyrene from the inside the basement perimeter walls and the very old wooden floor. We believe we could use Krystol T1 to seal the concrete floor and walls from inside and then buil a waterproof subfloor and properly waterproof walls. What do you think about using Krystol T1 to make the concrete more impermeable before installing. New floor and walls as per current standards ?

I use a form after doing what Mike does I pour in from the top and set the form up. This is for thicker basement walls. you can always touchup you work with more mortar. I also use a pool mason tool to grind it perfectly smooth. Mike has given me confidence and ideas to sell my work. Great Video.

Nice! Good bet that laying in some good bricks is going to last a lot longer than forming in a concrete patch, right? I just did a similar patch and only used quick-set concrete. I shoulda used some stone and/or brick. Also, in my case, after years of water getting in I think I needed to dig deeper, maybe to the footer, to tar the whole wall. Mike, can you comment on how much one needs to clean the area of the patching and surrounding area? I see so many other videos that seem to go to extremes sometimes in preparing the areas. instead of a quick brush down and spray of the immediate area,,,, they instead insist on power spraying, grinding, wire brushing, vacuuming and driving tapcons in everywhere and then some! In this video there is still a bit of dirt on the existing blocks at the sides and the mortar overlaps it a bit. Is this no big deal? are others going way overboard? just trying to learn here! Can you can compare that fast set reparation mortar that you use in your video to a normal mortar like " Quikrete Mason mix type S mortar" the only difference being the time to cure ? Hi Juques, I think they just used the word mortar in rapid set because you can also use it for brick work but I feel it is as hard and lasting as concrete, I do not use anything with lime or mortar to patch concrete , portland only for concrete repairs or the rapid set , thanks , thanks mike

Built in 1927, 4 feets crawlspace, stone fondation recover with some sort of weird concrete(?), alcoholic bricks with lime mortar, backyard too low and bad inclination etc etc etc. Some problems to fix and some digging to do( clay soil constanly humid very solid soil), more you look more you find just bad you don't have a hotline with a piggy bank for a consultation! 🤔👍

Question. How do you know if the foundation is busted. Water gets in the basement? My walls look wet when it rains and look like mold on the wall but i dont think its mold. I remember you said mold cant grow on concrete before in one of your videos. Thanks

Hi aggin,,, most times bricklayer lay bricks dry, otherwise when they are wet they make a mess, sometimes, I usually wet things for stucco or stick on stone, every situation is diffrent, thanks Mike

Hi Mike, I’ve got a similar issue. On my house with a crawl space, the dirt wasn’t graded so the water flows away from the house. I’ve been digging about 2 feet down, following the damage along the side of the house (making sure there is no wiring, piping etc along the way) and the blocks are not broken along the side but indented/slightly deteriorated all along where water has been setting and freezing for years. From what I can see, inside the crawl space, there doesn’t look to be any major problems yet. Could this technique, with that cement mix and tar be used for what Im describing or would you use a different mix?

Hey Mike. You make it look so simple. Question for you, when is a foundation unrepairable? I have a feild stone foundation from 1912 in Idaho that is settling. There is no basement and the floor joists sit on dirt. You can see lots of cracks in the cement block walls above it. I was told I have to lift the house and replace all all the feild stones with cement. Is this true or would a stone mason be able to help?
