Mike, you are the "Mortar motivational coach," the "Stone psychologist," the "Teacher of tools!" Clear, concise, encouraging, and, unfailingly, a Master Mason. Thank you for sharing your talents and tips with those of us who are quaking in our boots as we mix materials for the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd time and try to get something looking at least 75% as good as yours. Cheers! God bless.

I grew up being a hod tender for my dads mason company all the way through high school before I went into the Army. He was a full time teacher / school counselor and during the summer we and weekends did brick work. You learn a lot doing brick and masonry, I'll share with you my first lesson. At the tender age of about 7 my mom dropped me off at the job site along with dads lunch. My task was to pick up all the broken brick from around the house and dump the bucket where they would pour concrete for the porch and steps. The first lesson I learned, don't fill the bucket with brick....I couldn't lift it let alone move it. My dad passed away from cancer last year and watching your videos brings back many memory's and life lessons I learned working with him. Thank you...

It's so refreshing to finally see someone doing something without trying to make it sound like it's brain surgery. Sometimes a skill is more important than the science behind it. After 3-4 screwups (out of 7-8 contractors I hired in my lifetime), I embraced the same thought as you..."it's simple, anyone can do it". I started by fixing a huge drywall hole in the corner of my room, then replaced faucets and other minor things, eventually, after slowly seeing that my repairs are better than the people I hired, I did my own flat roof, assembled a new kitchen, did a paver patio, concrete repair, glass shower doors, chain link fence, and glass railings around the pool. It has been 4 years, and the things I did myself are holding up better than what was done in the house 2 years earlier. The only things I'm afraid to tackle are the front doors (double door with a large tramsome), and tiling (because if I screw something up, it's all trash, and hard to remove).

Just to mimic the real stone look, I didn’t want to use regular concrete mix as the gravel could get exposed. I live in Maryland. What would you recommend using for this project? Thank a lot. Looking forward to hear back from you. Steve.

Great video Mike as always. When you were describing your mix, what did you mean by mortar? Is it the premix mortar you buy at the store?. Thanks

Hi William, many times I make my own mixes, and I show what I use throughout the series, sometimes I think the premixes are ok, thanks Mike

Hey Mike. How do you get your mortar so smooth and sticky. I usually use the Quikrete S mortar from Home Depot and I can’t get it to work like that.

Hi Mike, I usually make my own mixes or add a little motar or potland to the premixes, but a lot of premix sand is too grainy, thanks Mike

Hi Mike, Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I hope that you're enjoying some rest and relaxation. I had a quick question about your bonding agent, Will it work on a foundation wall that has already been painted? I would like to plaster and paint it like you did in this video. I used it once on a non-painted block foundation wall and it turned out beautiful! Thanks in advance! God bless you.

Hi Dean. In other parts of the foundation repair videos I have done that, check them out, and just painted over it again, thanks Mike

Hey Mike, do you think that plaster/ mortar mix would be appropriate in the greater Boston area ?

Hi Mike, This is great. I have a somewhat similar project. I am in the Northeast and have a boathouse held up by 4 massive concrete pilings. Picture a pyramid with the top lopped off. Well they lower the lake every 5 years for repairs. The wave action has eroded two of these on the outward facing side maybe eaten up 6 in (they are 4 foot across). What mix should I buy to build up and repair and what should my approach be? Build up gradually over multiple days? Make a form? Thanks so much! I dont want to make a big deal about it. Just want to do it myself! Thanks!

Mike is 1 of the last honest contractors walking the planet...most other contractors would BS the client as to how it was going to "increase" the price of the dwelling by spending 10s of thousands for unnecessary repairs for a return of $2k...I admire Mike for that

that seems like somebody built foundation a bit too large so water running down house is going to run into the block and break it down.

Yep. Those bottom "j" channels to close off the bottom of the siding end behind the corner post....and dump all the rain water right on top of the corner foundation. Oh well...
