When I was a kid, we made bike parts money by mowing, hand-edging, and raking yards for a few elderly neighbors about once every two weeks. We charged around $10, and one guy tipped us with grapefruit from his trees in the back yard when they were ripe. - We weren't out to make big money, and honestly about 1/3 of what we made went to gas the mower. But boy, after a few months, our bicycles had cool seats and BMX stuff on them. (Most important was the goose neck pad, to protect our "genetic legacy area" from our usual self-mayhem.)

When I read that, I thought how awful some firms are, that they quoted her a huge amount which she clearly can't afford rather than do the work as a gesture of goodwill. Having said that, if they had done the work, she never would have met Spencer who has given her so much love. I think the hug said it all. It's probably the first contact she's had in a long time especially when she's elderly and living on her own. Spencer is an absolute sweetheart. I can't wait to see when all the work has been done. It would be lovely if she had someone to call in to her once or twice a week to do a little cleaning and laundry for her. Her neighbour calling to do it once a month made me roll my eyes. Once a month!

Your statement would be more correct if you add the word "completely" in front of alone. Many studies have shown and my life experience agrees with the studies that as people age that they do want to be alone more and the circle of people they are around shrinks due to many factors but choice is one of those factors. 99% of people don't want to be completely alone but there are some that are happy being a hermit.

What if it's another elder couple or a family dealing with special needs or a psychical disability or maybe they're just another poor soul working day in and day out to pay for groceries, insurance, gas, etc. and barely making it. As much as I agree with you, I have found that focusing on the solution instead of additional blame is much more productive and conducive to my own well-being. We don’t know the age, health, or anything about the closest neighbors. With today’s focus on online social media, not enough neighborhoods know each other anymore. Speaking as an elderly person, I can't tell you how much this is appreciated. Just 3 yrs ago I was able to landscape, mow & pressure wash our home. Now my husband is unable to help d/t falls & I have developed heart trouble. We are on a fixed income. You truly are a blessing!!!

Luckily where I live neighbors help each other out. If someone needs help 3 or 4 neighbors will pitch in .If a group of her neighbors did this they could have her yard maintained in very little time. No excuse!

I loved helping my neighbors where I used to live and cannot imagine living next to this sweet woman and not doing her lawn for her. As I'm getting older and starting to struggle with what used to come easily, I can tell you that this woman was grateful from the bottom of her heart. You gave this woman back the freedom to live her space. You can tell by the seating areas she once loved to sit under her trees and enjoy her yard. Now she can without risking her safety. There are fond memories in that yard, of kids now grown, a partner that may have passed. Times of barbecues and gatherings. Its lonely being locked in a home because its unsafe to go outside. Spencer, you've helped her in ways you can't even imagine.

It sounds like they will be from Spencer said in the video, but you’re right, local governments should have a program in place to help their elderly citizens in need. I’m sure there are some legalities that have to be addressed, but it’s not an insurmountable task to do what is right.

I respectfully disagree that the city (or any gov't agency) should be doing this. In a good world this should be handled by local community volunteers. A gov't agency would be wasted tax dollars on paid bureaucrats whose main role is little more than deciding who gets a piece of the pie. That is precisely why we have a bloated gov't today. Add to that there will always be those trying to take advantage of the system. This may be overly simplified but more bureaucracy is not a cost effective answer.
