Great job, something about laying bricks that looks so therapeutic and the reward of seeing the progression as you go along.

Lots of home veneer brick laid here in the DFW area of Texas. Had a left handed layer as a partner back in the mid '70's thru the mid '80's. On the long stretches of the walls he would start on one end of the run & i on the other. Learned as a cub to spread mortar with both hands & it came in handy, as i could begin at the far end where my partner was, and spread left handed, back to my end of the run & take off meeting him somewhere in the middle of the run. Miss the therapy & the youth of my days back then. Full head joints by the way, are a must for a strong wall... good to see them being used. There was a sayin' back then''' ''We Bricklayers are alway's gettin' a little ahead, or a little behind, on both our mortgage and our bond.'' Out of respect of you're committment to our Savior... i edited out our young & foolish saying. Blessin' on you're site Chris Longhurst & Cheers' from all of the Kentmere Gilpins that it took to get me to America. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentmere 71518

How to spot a Cowboy builder? Watch a. video like this and when they are measuring up and quoting, throw a couple of questions in that only a builder or viewer of a video like this would know and if they don't come back, then they're a bad un! I built my own concrete and brick conservatory base and then fitted the 10 x 12ft conservatory myself and did the leadwork myself to a good standard too and know what to ask and expect. Roofers are by far the worst for conning though! Believe me!

Should the half bat at the window jam,be clean and square at the back of the brick,? Just a query,🇮🇪🇮🇪
@Carl-yu6uw6 жыл бұрын
Great stuff. Maybe a very dim question, but here goes... are building plans that are specified in mm measured into brickwork measurements also, or are brick runs tweaked as best fit on site by the brickies?
@luli58516 жыл бұрын
Carl utilizes the level ruler, horizontal lines and vertical lines to measure and assure the qualities of the works.

Would the foam insulation panels placed beneath the concrete slab cause movement over time? The slab can compress this softer layer.
@suetheron44954 жыл бұрын
i see you've added insulation into the wall cavity - how far does this go down - is the cavity left hollow only beneath the damp proof course?

Just curious,on the window and door jams, should the half bat brick,not be cut square at the back,to allow dpc to sit flush on the back of the brick,??

Hi. I liked ur videos quite interesting & helpful especially for those who want to learn more about extensions.& to reduce costs. You know all the prices. I am planning for an extension at the side of my flat. It’s four in a block cottage flat but through land registry I know this part of land belongs to me only .neighbour downstairs have own access to their main door. My question would I get permission for a 2 storey extension. How much it cost for permission? The extension I m thinking about 32 square metres. I asked couple of Builders quote me roughly £2000 to 2500 m2 double storey extension.roughly about £60,000 job. My budget is £40,000 . How can I reduce cost ? Which material to use or who to use to reduce labour cost & materials? Any suggestions will be appropriated ? I m in Glasgow,Scotland. Thanks

Keying the bricks into the corner of the existing house, is that just for aesthetics or is it better than using the stainless steel joining bars? I notice you used them for the inner block skin but not for the outer brick.

Yes, thought it would look better than a straight joint!

@SilverTrowel6315 жыл бұрын
I'm suprised you got away with toothing the brickwork into the existing building. We aint done that since the 80's. They make us use wall starters like you used for the block skin. Also, why do you use a damp tray at DPC level? We only use damp trays where the cavity is bridged, like when using catnic lintols. Other than that, the brickwork is tidy.

The overhang from the roof can't go beyond the boundary, so the wall has to be set back to allow space.

Chris Longhurst that’s fair enough but he is cack handed , turning the Brick after he’s perped it. He should watch you, pick it up, two swipes, in the wall. He’s putting the joint on the wrong end of brick in relation to the way he’s laying. I’m not commenting on speed, merely his technique. Thanks

Profiles not always fast as it depends on each individual job, we had corners and felt it was as quick free hand...some times profiles are a nuisance and can lift the bottom courses..
