Hey Greg, Great video and plug for St Jude, I actually got to tour the main hospital in Memphis some years back. My nonprofit focuses on donors looking for naming rights to buildings and websites. I really think you should let a lot of nonprofits out there know that they will need to get their 501(c)(3) status from the IRS or they will be subject to the Corporate Transparency Act in 2024.

Thanks for this video. I have on further question. Registering in order to fund-raise? Must it be done in the state where your non-profit is registered? In my case that is Texas. Or must we register in everystate where our potential donors live? From the video sounds as though I need to register in every state. Appreciate your time and efforts.

It's not just the state in which the organization is located. It's most anywhere you are drawing donations from. Fortunately, most charities are exempt in Texas from registration. It has a registration system, but only for law-enforcement related charities. If you are cultivating donors or patrons in other states, however, you may have a multi-state registration requirement. If a donor in another state has a relationship with one of our beneficiaries and decided to donate through our nonprofit ministry, do we then need to register a solicitations certficiate in that state?

Probably not if this is a one-off. If you intend to cultivate that donor for future gifts, even if pass-through, you may trigger a registration requirement.

Private foundations are required to give/spend at least 5% of net assets every year for charitable purposes.
