This is the introduction to a series of lectures on absolutism in early modern Europe. Louis XIV, Peter the Great, and the Fredericks of Prussia all had to overcome the influence of privileged groups (church, nobility, representative bodies, towns) in order to establish themselves as absolute monarchs.
