@@mk677hd Technically, it is mostly viewed as a power series, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characterizations_of_the_exponential_function number 2. Per definition, e is the output of it when evaluated at 1. This view also makes it easier to understand what e to the power of a square matrix should be, as you can just multiply e some matrix times to itself. Hope this made the intention behind this notation more clear.
