Highlight. Midtone. Shadow. Reflected Light. Long ago the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the terminator attacked. Only the artist, master of all four elements, could stop it, but when the canvas needed him the most, he vanished.

thank you soo much, you're a really good teacher...even if you repeat things, i like that you explain WHY the light affects things. my brain prefers to hear the "why" in order for me to remember how to use it. thanks! :)

I laughed so hard on "The Terminator". =) P.S.: Your videos are really interesting because they explain why this is this and that is that from physical point.

Hmmmmmmmm. I always thought that a highlinght is when angle of incidence=angle of refraction. Half tone is when plane is parrallel to light source (ie it's not in shadow nor reflecting direct light.) and shadow is when plane is turning away from light.

For those who think light only reflects in the direction opposite the angle of incidence: Think of a laser aimed straight at a flat wall. Does the reflected light hit your retina when you look at the wall from an angle less than 90 degrees? Or does all the reflected light go back to the laser? Conceptually the light should bounce straight back, but there is more going on in the real world than in this type of simplified physics.

Noooo the light wont randomly bonces on a perpendicular surface :(. Light reflect at about the same angle that it hit! On a perfectly plane surface tough :p

I do love your work and I do have tons of respect for you, though I have to say, there is a mistake in your explanation... When light that perpendicular to the plane hits that plane it bounces right back at the same angle! It does not bounce to the side.. Just physics.. I'm sure you already know what I'm saying and were thinking only about how to explain things easier and got a little distracted.. I'm not trying to say anything nasty..

Both of you are right. It's tricky to explain. Look at this 3d sphere 1.bp.blogspot.com/-c0Ff6Tspw9c/TtBb8CUGegI/AAAAAAAAAFY/SUc0Xu1CAXk/s1600/nmm-pire_01_sphere+-+Copy.jpg You may notice there is a highlight spot in the midtone area. That spot does not perpendicular to the light but it reflects the light directly into our eyes. So the planes perpendicular to the light is very bright but that spot is actually the brightest. This does not occur to rough surfaces tho

I suspect that the light particles or photons shatter when they hit an object at a sharp angle (meaning they will bounce in very many directions, not just straight back to the source) Usually no light rays are so parallel as in these explanations, he's just using it to simplify. Normally when al ight hits an object there are tons of non-parallel rays going in all directions on the object and this means because (if) the light scatters like I just suggested, the even if you look at a plane that is straight in front of the light from the side where theoretically the least amount of light from that plane could be reflected to your retina, you will still see it as very well lit (and you can try this with any light source on a wall in your home) even sunlight rays usually don't appear this parallel because they pass through our atmosphere which causes them to diffuse, and they also tend to pass through clouds which further diffuses them (spreading them in all directions, again)

standard paper dosn't really reflect light on other surfaces though... (not enough for us to notice.) So ur comment dosnt make much sense.

Funny thing is that every subject there is could be explained in that fun and easy way... It's sad that educational system does not include proper and talented artists like Sycra to get involved into educational process.. I guess they just don't want kids to have fun while studying..

Olga Balakshina One time, we had an artist come in from Marvel comics to my school. And he showed us how he drew faces. Another time, when I was still in elementary, a painter came in and painted on a huge canvas, and we hung it up in the LMC. Keep in mind that this is a normal middle school, not a private art school. So sometimes, good stuff comes out of the educational system. But yea, sometimes it can be crappy. :P

Aniarix yep, sometimes kids get lucky, but that's the sad thing.. having fun while studying - considered LUCKY, when it should be COMMON. We had ONE teacher who made class fun and everybody loved him, and rest of the teachers were angry and revengful, often pissed at us.. especially if their class were right after that cool teacher's class..
