#tenet #explained
In Tenet, the mind bending thriller from Christopher Nolan, a CIA agent has to travel through time and bend the laws of nature to prevent World War III. We're breaking down the films increasingly complex and massive scale story, answering every question along the way, and explaining the meaning of the ending.
P.S. Yes this is my longest video ever. Curse you Nolan!!!

Prescott Herbert I agree with you I feel like Nolan wanted to make a high concept Scfi movie for hardcore fans of the genre. He succeeded but it kinda left casual viewers out in the cold. Inception I argue hits just the right balance of complexity and accessibility. Interstellar I’ve always argue was Nolan’s own version 2001 a space odyssey

@lunacouer
@lunacouer 3 жыл бұрын
Isn't light kinda special though? Because light (photons/light waves) has no mass, it doesn't experience time. It's why nothing can be faster than light in our universe - everything else has mass slowing it down, causing it to experience time. So I think inversion has no effect on light. Or it could all just be a contrivance in service to the plot, and they never thought of it 😂

Tenet is a good movie, it’s nice seeing people who like the movie also nice seeing those who don’t quite get it either. Nolan was very daring with his 3rd time I believe telling a story of with time. Neil tells us who’s at war when he explains the grandfather paradox. We’re learning about a much much bigger battle backwards it’s almost like a origin story for how the protagonist becomes the leader of the organization. The battle between our future selves and past. Weird hearing your future self is trying to kill you, usually it’s the other way around but the movie inverts that train of thought.

@@jakespacepiratee3740 Exactly, as the far future "antagonists" would have died from old age in the first place if they were to try inverting themselves to "stop" the global warming event by committing the grandfather paradox war crime. I believe the reason we don’t find out the name for protagonist name or backstory is because he not only started up tenet but also was in the group that wanted to end the world. That is why information is directly kept from him. It points out that the antagonist cannot know that he failes. If so he will just go back and keep trying until he was successful. This gives a big the reasons why we know nothing of the main character he is both sides of the coin. What do you think?

But judging by how the world hasn't been reverted by a bunch of tactical gear agents and Priya even stated the scientist inventing inverted materials committed suicide after knowing the "antagonists" would try to use it to destroy the past, but also it was revealed that Protagonist is the founder of Tenet in the future, but the tech wouldn't have been invented way after our lifetime. Plus unlike conventional time travel, a person, even if having their body reverted to the past, would still age as a normal person for the time it takes for them to go the point that they went back, so Tenet agents (Neil included) are much older than they appear, with Sir Michael stated his involvement in the Cold War as well. Even if Protagonist is the real antagonist and all of these are his future-self attempts to uh, dominate the world. then someone else, even bigger than Tenet, pulled the strings so that the future doesn't commit the grandfather paradox in the first place. Why would he want to kill everyone in the past if that risks creating a paradox?

My question is, if Neil was sent back from the future to the beginning of the movie, that means he must have spent like half his life traveling backwards in time right? Since time travel isn't instant. So in order for him to have traveled all the way back to the beginning he must have spent years living in inverted time. Which also means the time he spent with the protagonist in the future must have been when he was like a teenager? Which means he was probably recruited as a kid?

One reason Tenet is so confusing is because there's a lot of filler storylines that seem important but really aren't. Like multiple huge storylines. And ironically some of those (the stuff with the Mob, CIA and Tenet itself) were more confusing than the inverse stuff. Plot is actually simple: John sets up a series of events in the past from the future to stop the universe from ending because he knows exactly what needs to happen because he lived through it and got help from himself. Everything else is just confusing for the sake of being confusing. Plus seeing inverted people do stuff (and the whole ending fight) is kind of a mind fuck but that's not plot crucial.

Nolan’s movies are always a big picture for a really simple lesson. In this case i believe its “whats happened, happened. But its not an excuse to do nothing”. As you said whatever happened is going to happen no matter what. Kane telling john that there was an explosion on the day of the opera pretty much foiled sator’s plan. If john knows where and when the explosion is, one way or another, he can prevent it from making its way to the future as intended. Sators plan was foiled from the start, but only if they continued with the mission as they need to. So again whats happened happened = they save the world, but its not an excuse to do nothing = they need to save the world to have saved it in the first place.

Long time ago at a Blur concert. The big screen behind the band played a coiled turd at rest. It started to unfold as it re-entered the hole it came from... about seven thousand people simultaneously cried out in disgust... I've never forget.

actually not really. The movie is very straight forward. Neil's entire journey explains it. The more you learn, the more you realize that things need to happen because they already happened. That is why ignorance was so powerful. Knowing meant you no longer could change anything without reprecussions. Neil probably didn't know things at the start, but as the movie went on he began to realize what he had to do, and accept death so that the org can be made. The creation of the org leads to his death, they are linked. It was self-fulling, and leaving it to chance wasn't an option. That is what Neil meant at the end. He had to see it through to the end, or else something could change. He also had to be prepared to deal with any changing threats. He basically exists in that pocket timeline knowing full well that anything could come. That is why the future is fked, and why the org was created. The more people realized that time can be tampered with, the more they realized how they screwed themselves. Ignorance is the only solution. Everything in the movie is completely straight forward, it just seems complicated because it wasn't explained well enough. They also wanted to leave ambiguity for plot and reasoning, which makes it hard to fully explain things. If you knew exactly what was going on, it boils down to a movie about stopping a bad guy who wants to destroy the world. This movie was just taking a spin on creating an action adventure flick using a unique gimmick.

@@yummychips_ i get most of it, what I need more clarification is how did the inverted neil get into the bunker before the protagonist+ives and volkov? the city was already occupied and guarded and had temporal pincer in place. There is no scene that I remember to show how neil could have gone into the turnstile and made it through both normal and inverted units. The hole in the ceiling isn't an option since the humvee wouldn't be there. Can someone help me out

This is the type of movie that you appreciate after minutes / hours / days of thinking of the plot. I wouldn't lump this with inception, memento or other Nolan films, because with memento, you get a mind blow effect at the end of the film, and subsequent watches will make you appreciate the film. With inception, you already "get" the film, and the subsequent thoughts would be theory crafting or interpretations (like, was he really in the real world... or how much time did he spend in the dream world etc.) With this though, subsequent watching will not only make you appreciate the film, but it's almost downright crucial to understand what's going on. Nolan truly transcended how "mind bending" films work with this one. But I will have to be honest, that if a more indie film maker would've done this, I would've brushed it off as being ???? But since it's made by Nolan, I took the time to actually figure out what he was trying to convey... and it's definitely different from the usual films, even to his standard.
