Fountain Pen Shootout #32: Oversize Massacre

It's time for another... Fountain Pen Shootout. This time, I'll compare the Montblanc Meisterstück 149, Pelikan Souverän M1000, Delta Dolcevita Oversize, Omas 360 (original version), Visconti Homo Sapiens Steel Oversize, and Yard-O-Led Retro Grand - because size really doesmatter. Sometimes.

What I mean by tube is that at the ink window (in the 2000), you see that the bit actually holding the ink is narrower. The ink does not touch the window from the inside. I would definitely refer to this as a piston filler but I imagine 'not touching the window' does affect the capacity a bit, which might be the reason for not calling the Yard-O-Led a 'true' piston. Theorizing away, I am :)

Yes, the nib is huge 18kt quite springy single tone platinum plated, and I never tire of twisting the bottom to reveal the nib from the body

Pure genius. Breathtaking throughout. I agree with others that this has to be the best shootout so far.. All great pens...my favourite of those lot would be the 149 and the OMAS 360. And then there's the Paragon...lol am I convincing you yet?

So far, I have added two little brothers to the pens in this shoot-out, mostly because I couldn't justify another $200-400 for the oversize. My collection includes a Pelikan Souverän M800 (OM nib) and a Dolce Vita Medium-size (M nib). I just couldn't bring myself to pay the extra required for the M1000 or Oversize. Maybe next year. I really enjoyed this "Oversize Massacre." Your reviews are extremely helpful as well as interesting. Keep 'em coming, Stephen.

No, I think they were made in the early 00's. I picked up one on eBay brand new for a 'very reasonable price' I think there quite rare as they were not that popular. Can't think why though

Although I'm not a huge fan of oversized pens, I was rather interested in watching this (I enjoy all of your videos). the one burning question I had, however, was what it is that you teach since you mentioned your students. I found it quite amusing that apparently I wasn't the only one who was curious about that since going through the comments revealed that you took the time to answer that at least half a dozen times.

those big boys are cool, but literally a pain to write with...my wrist doesn't appreciate it too much...i like heavy-ish mid-sized pens (are for me better to write long amounts of time) for collection purposes and occasional use it's a totally different thing

I have a MB Boheme big size- retractable. It's almost as big as a 149. Would be a good pen to add to this massacre!

Thanks for the comparison Scott. Will we get pop up tables in the future massacres so we can keep up with the multivariate analysis: skips, nib value, smoothness, sounds, feedback, wetness. Pen size, Ink Volumes. AS always you were a diplomat and that is why we watch the channel. I like the Pelikan's a bit more than MB. I find my OMAS 360 a bit toothy and the low cost Churchman Presecriptor is in the game with the pack of 6 so future video massacres are limitless for you. Well done.

couple of questions- is the Omas compatible with the travelling ink well due to its unique shape? second- could you do a video/blog re. nib singing- my pilot vanishing point did this when new, but has since lost her voice- what causes this, why is it so good? awesome vid.

How is a singing nib a good sign? My singing Duofold Centennial concerns me as it sprays a fine mist on a fast horizontal. The nib is aligned well, but it still occurs. Does it not need further attention from a nibmeister?

A big pen that is missing is the Sailor KOP.. I just received their clear demonstrator from the PenGallery in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia..great service by the way: I got a broad nib..Steven, I recommend getting your hands on one, the quality of construction on the demonstrator is amazing and nib is very smooth..worth a review and you could use it in a shoot out .

Those are two very different pens. The 360 is a lot bigger than the 149 and has a much more original design. Both are very nice pens, though.
