Healing is automatic, you just would roll a d6 and then add the Cleric's L, the total would be the Life points healed. I think the only spells from the core book that need a spell roll would be Lightning and Fireball. Blessing, Protect, Heal, Escape are all automatic. Other books that add additional spells would be Wayferer's & Adventerurers, the novela, Heart of the LIzard has an appendix with d8 Pyromancy spells, and Caverns of Chaos. The way I play is that level 1 dungeon use Core spell table, level 2 use W&A, level 3 dungeons (Fiendish Foes) use HotL, and level 4 dungeons use the chaos spell table. The Magic Orb 0 level Wizard's Tower adventure also has cantrips. As for wandering monsters, whenever you re-enter a previous space you always roll for WM. Unfortunately, fleeing and withdrawing are one of those rules that is just super difficult to find in the corebook and remember where they are located or remembering off hand the difference between the two. House rules I use is that blessing is automatic, so if my cleric gets turned to stone, the blessing can be retroactive and still work on my cleric. I also always have the entrance tile always be empty. So no special rolls, like a fountain, but also, never any monsters or WM.

One fun aspect of the core book is the Tetris like or puzzle feel of placing the tiles. For the door situation, you could prob just assume the door was always there but your party never chose to go through that way. 4ad isn't 100% an rpg (though you can easily turn it into one) its more like a dungeon sim. Your dungeon dudes like little mice that you've wand up and you're mainly just watching them maneuver through dungeon, and then retroactively explaining and telling the story of what happened. There's a slight difference between a simulation an rpg where everything equates to something to a 1 to 1 ratio, in 4ad, things are abstracted. Minions have only 1hp, in normal D&D orcs would have more than 1hp, and the battle could have actually lasted for several minutes, the rules have been simplified so you get the gist of how the battle went instead of a blow for blow rundown on how everything went.

That makes so much more sense. I just assumed you'd need to no roll a 1, but then again, that book wasn't easy to read; I really struggled with trying to learn even the basic rules. I really like "the entrance room is always empty" - it seems I keep running to WMs on my way out! I've played a few random dungeons since this video and am a bit better at the system but still have so much I could learn. But buying so many supplements doesn't sound too appealing. I'm going to try and pick up one here and there and build up slowly. I now have Dark Waters (print) as well as Kobolds (PDF). The adventures are fun, but maybe Twisted Minions would be good next. Something to change up the combat. edit: Found this at BGG about the Healing power being just a roll, no test to fail. Thank you for the kind words! I am having a great time learning these; they're great relief to that dungeon crawl itch I couldn't seem to scratch with a board game :) Other than a few rules questions here or there it's been manageable.

I've never heard it put that way before, interesting! I wonder if it's a regional thing. Thanks for putting the timestamp in there so I could easily go see exactly what I said - notice how I laughed a bit. What was going through my mind was how frustrated my wife gets with me because I say it every time she asks me to make a choice. She will start to ask me and then stop herself and exasperatedly say "nevermind, I know you're just going to pick right!" And then of course I giggle like a fool. :D

I appreciate you working on getting through the game, figuring out what you like and don't and being honest about it. Not everything is always right for everyone and we might have to make our own tweaks and rules to make it fun for us and to fulfill the current need.

I’ve tried a few solo games and found the simplicity and flow of this game(after filtering through all my books, haha) is so much fun and easy to get into quickly. Thank you for these videos. Well done sir

It sure is nice to be able to sit down with nothing and be playing in 5 minutes. I have since investigated some of the supplements and - oh my there is a lot there! With all of it you'd spend so much time trying to narrow down which book has what class you want. I saw someone suggest pick only two supplements at random from your collection and play with just use those. That sounds like it would work well.
