This edition of Four Allemandes by Johann Schop is edited by Voxman and Block for three bassoons or three trombones. It was originally published by Southern Music but is now under the Hal Leonard label.
On the OMEA state list this is a level C bassoon trio. Players must do any two of the movements.
I. Allegro Moderato
Set in 4/4 and in the key of Ab major, this movement is in AABB form. The range of the first bassoon part is from third space Eb to F above the staff. The second and third bassoon parts are from first space Ab to Eb above the staff. This is the easiest piece of the set.
II. Moderato
Set is 4/4, this movement is in Eb major. The first bassoon range is from second line Bb to Eb above the staff. The second bassoon part goes from first space Ab up to F above the staff (a higher range than the 1st bassoon part), and the third bassoon part goes from third space D up to Eb above the staff. This piece has much more involved parts for the 2nd and 3rd bassoons than for the first.
III. Moderato
This movement is in 4/4 for the repeated A sections and then changes to 3/2 for the B sections. This involves not only a time change but a significant tempo change. The key is G major. The first and third bassoon parts range from fourth line F# up to E above the staff. The second bassoon part holds the bass in this movement with a range from first line G up to C above the staff. It is one of the most fun pieces in the set and has some challenges with the key and time.
IV. Andantino
This final movement begins in 4/4 for the repeated A sections and then changes to 3/2 for the repeated B sections. As with the previous movement this involves a counting and tempo change. The key is Eb major . Overall, ranges are similar to the other movements but because of the canonic elements in the A section, all three bassoons parts go up to Eb above the staff.
Recorded and edited by Jesse Duncan in Schuster Hall at Wright State University.
