Most of this seems like pseudoscience regurgitated by a certain group of people. Of course not all of it (exhaling forcefully when doing something hard is good and practiced in martial arts for example - depending on the exercise you're performing because exhaling while doing the hard movement sometimes relaxes other parts of the body and loses stability, so sometimes it's better to inhale, keep the air in while doing the movement then exhaling after you did it - heavy squats is a good example because if you didn't finish the movement after you finished exhaling you lose core tension, that's why a lot of people would tend to hold their breath while bouldering, gives them a lot more core stability).

While you're probably correct that breathing techniques aren't really scientifically studied, I can tell you, both from my own experience and others, that honing in your breathing techniques and effectively using them while climbing has been a game changer for me. Similarly to how you mention that if you breathe incorrectly during a heavy squat, you likely will fail or even worse, injure yourself, breathing techniques for climbing are super important. As well, there are definitely "correct" and "incorrect" ways to breathe at different times during a climb (i.e. when you say "depending on the exercise you're performing because exhaling while doing the hard movement sometimes relaxes other parts of the body and loses stability") and you can climb "hard" without good breathing techniques, but sooner or later, it's going to be something you need to work on. Before slamming down these ideas, give it a try! Another suggestion is to cut a plastic straw to a length of a few inches and while climbing, only inhale through your nose, and exhale through the straw (clamp your teeth around it). This will give you a noticeably engaged circumference around your abs/lower back.
