It is truly a tribute to his talent that so many think of this song as a traditional folk song. Tommy Makem wrote it.

Requiem for the Croppies, by Séamus Heaney. An amazing piece of verse, as is the song itself, penned by the late great Tommy Makem. All of the Clancy brothers AND Tommy Makem have gone to their reward now, but what a legacy they left.

Well Tommy would be devastated to hear, and so am I, that with our attempts at not upsetting other cultures living here we are in fact losing our own culture and heritage. Irish kids in many Irish schools are no longer hearing their names being called out "as Gaeilge" from the Rolla anymore.. Teachers just call out "John, Mark, Eoin, Mary" etc.. Something needs to be done about this.. I've spoken to the Principal about the importance of letting the kids know their names "as Gaeilge" as it's their right and their heritage, and all he said was that he'd ask the teachers their opinion at the next staff meeting.. I find it atrocious.. Our attempts at being "with it" are causing us to be "without it".. And we are losing our language, and our heritage with each generation by allowing this to happen..

There's a picture of Tommy or Liam holding me as a baby somewhere in the family pictures. I'd have to ask me parents who it was, but I've loved this song and Down by the Glenside since I could speak.

That's the one I grew up with. The Clancy's were best with Tommy! Thank you. This was my Grandmother's favorite - "They took the best part for themselves.", She often said. For you Grandma! We all love you.
