Many are also bleak and thought-provoking- one reason I enjoy them so much- as in Hollywood, glitzy-land where there's too much "bubble gum sentiment" along come Prince and Princess Charming- life's not like that-

Every film on YT seems to have so many comments from people who like something and have to show it by trashing something else with some grand generalisation. Usually there's some comment on present morals or the volume of contemporary film. I'm glad you enjoyed this, but sorry that it means you can't enjoy other genres or anything from the USA.

The storyline IS a bit of a puzzle; it's a bit like an EastEnders episode--if you haven't been watching regularly, ya don't quite know what's going on with the various characters and scenarios. I enjoy bleak, gritty drama, though. The so-called 'kitchen sink' genre of old British cinema is appealing to me--"A Taste of Honey ", " The Whisperers " and "Tiger Bay", for example. The only other film that I've seen Anne Lynn in is the gothic horror movie " The Black Torment ". Thanks for posting !
@markstuckey6639

Yes. They were really moving films. But I think "A Taste of Honey" and "Tiger Bay" were much better than this; perhaps because Rita Tushingham and Haley Mills are better actresses than Dame Judi. Thanks for the tip about "The Whisperers".

The body hinted to the man with Ann Lynn, as he appeared the oddest. He wanted sex she wanted love. The drowned girl was 26, with no jewelry being in the water for 36 hours. She was well dressed with nylons, etc. The two leading men both had Irish accents to add intrique.

To many liaisons are full of frustrated people, in the early 60's, women esp. Raised to believe" anatomy is destiny" but also wanting your life to be "how it was" during courtship- very frustrating. Both are in a box and the baby will suffer- kids take in arguments- adults don't realize what goes in to a child's mind- I feel as she does, I've been married for years but I feel like things important to me are slowly seeping out, yet I love my husband. British dramas- I watched this initially to see a young Judy Dench! Only a few actors, "cheap sets" and yet so much is conveyed. And people have "large" noses and wrinkles etc- not like Hollywood where it's all fake- and that is partly what is in her heart- that media brainwashing- or in the other girl, emigrating to Canada- where I live and I want to move to England! Namaste

WHAT WAS THE CONNECTION TO THE WOMAN IN THE RIVER ?
@AFaceintheCrowd01
@AFaceintheCrowd01 2 жыл бұрын
She represents death -- the lighthouse that blinks for us all. There is a woman in the story who is a waitress -- she is a metaphor for wanting something. All waitresses in films are a metaphor for wanting something. The film is about the search for family. The relentless, ultimately futile search for meaningful connection, or at least a place at the table. Futile because the "woman in the river" awaits us all. The crying baby is meant to represent the audience -- crying for explanation -- while also (and here's the waitress metaphor again) wanting something. Something from the metaphoric menu of life (represented by water, always). In this case, comfort or perhaps food. An important scene cut from the film: granny comes in, trips over the cat, lands on the stove in sitting position. Man: "Granny, you're too old to be riding the range."

Wot, not enuf CGI or spfx 4u? If that's what you want there are plenty of other movies elsewhere. OK it's by no means the best movie ever, but it is a good example of what they used to call "kitchen sink drama". It's also of historical interest as one of the first films Dame Judi Dench was in. A bit hackneyed in its themes, yes, but well filmed and still of considerable interest for those who like 60s British films.

So when did the Brits finally get color?!

it was cheaper to film in B&W. There were a lot of British films from the 1940s onwards that were in colour.

The English in particular weren't cognizant of babies needs it seems? I would have gathered the child into my bed, for reassurance at least.

first I thought she was a bitch? A teething child can cry for 10 min after she medicated it. Good thing she eventually figured to just put the kid in her bed? But the husband was stressing her out too! He learns why she felt neglected;(because ... She IS the killers next victim;)

@stevenhoman2253 I know someone in England who gathered her child into her bed too; fell asleep and smothered them to death by accident. This course of action is not to be recommended.

Anita Leahy .... I didn’t think it was “rubbish”. I like these kitchen-sink dramas of the 1960s. They are not for everyone, but I like watching complex relationships between people.

these were the type of brit movies shown in very late 50s to early 60s that were shown at the albuquerque Kimo at midnight for one viewing?...lines of teens standing in long lines wrapped around the corner or down the block on Central late at night to get in were long....WHY??? because of the sex and nude bodies exposed and story lines that were over our head....I remember seeing a brit movie where it showed a baby being born....Nope American movies were not explicit back then. In this movie judi dench is missing a bottom tooth and is a borderline abusive parent...at the beginning of the movie had that baby been left alone in the house by the father?. now "Dame" Judi Dench.
