I love these lectures so much. The interaction Ben has with the people in these and the excitement level is what got me into watching chess... Ever wonder if you could sell a tour of greatest players of the past . Also a random most influential games that shaped modern chess.

19:47 The whole story about your greatest student really resonated. I often catch myself making notes about my games. Checklists, things I need to remember, thing my coach told me...and then I find myself in a game trying to be smart instead of developing my pieces. Sometimes we focus to much on trying to be clever and forget to adopt the beginner mindset and do the foundations correctly. Im about 1200, if I applied everything correctly...easy id be 1600. Im convinced. Its just hard to put everything into practice.

24:08 case in point why attacking concepts in chess take more thought and time (clock disadvantage) for lower rated players who do all these calculations and stuff, while the opponent just has to spend little time making the most forcing reply. And when the attack fizzles out/ tactic doesn’t work, you lost advantage AND time. Thus the person who thought they saw something loses.

Many years ago I ran into a very strong Im in Washington square park Bernard Zuckerman. Somehow we were looking at a chess position,(don’t remember the position ) probably from a blitz game and Bernie made a suggestion. I said (channeling Finegold from many years in the future) nah I’m not doing that and Zuckerman said so you like to give your opponent counterplay I must remember that if I ever play you. You are right people don’t change 😮

I know what he means by seeing a little more can make chess more difficult in some cases. When doing puzzles, I often calculate a bit and choose what seems like the best thing. Sometimes, the first instinct guess move works, which is why it's such an easy puzzle compared to many others. I sometimes even, if I can't calculate a solid advantage, just go with my first guess. All the variations I'm considering just don't work out. It's pretty annoying too when my educated guess is like engine rated 1 pawn down, so my guess was pretty close. It just blows a winning advantage that some random person retains by playing the simplest move like a capture of a piece or something.

Ben is talking about certain type of autism. The grandmaster type. Not all autistic people are like Spock from Star Trek or like Lisa Simpson. Some of them are more like Homer or Kirk, except those are closer to ADHD, which is still in the spectrum according to some.
