This piece is a famous jazz standard that features the guitar genius of Wes Montgomery. This tune was first recorded for the album “The Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery” in 1960. This album featured Wes Montgomery on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums. This tune is called “Four On Six’ because it refers to 4/4 rhythms superimposed on a 6/8 rhythm. The form is AA*BA. The A section is an intro bass line that is played in unison with guitar, bass, and piano. It moves by 5ths and outlines the main chord changes in the tune. The A* section has the same bass line, but the guitar is playing a modal melody that is based on the notes in a Gm9 chord. The B section has chord hits that move in a ii-v sequence that follow the harmony of the intro. Then we move back into the A section and repeat for the solo section. We are basing our performance on the version from the album “Smokin at the Half Note”.
