Mounted with good lens, the performance of D850 is simply amazing. I used D850 + Nikon lens AF S 200-500 mm to do my micro shot. Good for portrait and wildlife photography .

A proud owner of Nikon D800E since the last 6 years, my camera has been working like a boss even since I bought it. I'm sure my next camera would be this amazing master piece. Can't wait to put my hands on it.

I upgraded to the D850 from the D800 and all I can say is wow. Not only the more resolution but the 7fps is a huge leap in the number of keepers I get for action shots. Now I need more hard drives for the huge files. The ISO noise is on par with the D810, don't expect miracles on that front. The dynamic range is better, focusing is better, touch screen is way better too. A real pleasure to shoot with and all the customization's to the buttons allows you to make it your own.

I received the D850 from B&H 8 months ago. It seems like I ordered it the first week it came out and I didn't get it until December... Anyway, I have owned a couple of D800s and one D810, which were great cameras, but the D850 is an order of magnitude better. I just got back from taking some architecture and landscape photos in Japan and I was impressed by the DR. I could expose for the highlights and bring up whatever I wanted from the underexposed areas using lightroom or selectively with photoshop. It the darkest areas could be brought forward as many as 5 stops in one test photo I made, and it looked as well as if I did exposure bracketing and HDR processing. I was shooting almost exclusively with a 8-15 mm zoom fisheye. My colleague was shooting with the 24-120 zoom and the 80-400 zoom and he got great results as well. (We are two old school Nikon geeks who only recently started shooting digital when the D800 came out.) Besides the long wait and poor communications on lead times, I've got to say I am a big fan of B&H. They give me great advice over the phone, and they have locked themselves in as one of our preferred vendors (along with Yodobashi in Japan.)

Focus shift on the cookies wasn't the best idea. Everyone knows how a cookie looks plus the resultant composite came out just as if had been taken with a point-and-shoot or a phone camera. Some extra depth of field is always a rare commodity in bugs and flowers macro but then the subject needs to be fairly still... Nice feature anyway!

Photoshop does a poor job compared to Zerene or Helicon focus stacking software. Also, for close up macro work with shorter foal length lenses, it's better to move the camera (on a computer controlled stacking rail) not the focus, as perspective changes ruin the shot. For landscape on a still day though, focus stacking can work wonders with the D850.

A good tripod to consider is the Manfrotto Element Big Aluminum Traveler Tripod (Black) , being that it is strong yet compact. bhpho.to/32EpgjL

I have yet to see a focus stacking demo yet that wasn't broken. Normally this wouldn't be a concern because you have enough source you can fix it in post. But I have yet to hear a single reviewer say "It's not perfect, but it makes a very good first stab that requires only a little manual attention. This would be insanely time consuming, completely impractical and possibly even just plain impossible to do by hand, so props." Usually the claims imply that the reviewer thinks the job is done. "And all the tulips are in focus" and... the leaves are crap. It makes me wonder if the reviewers are all blind, aren't fully forthcoming with their motivations, or what.

I have the D850... and see the same issues I ran into here with Focus shift.. .The top edges of the cookies will be out of focus in some areas because the top Edges cookie edges will fight the placemat focus.. You won't see this on the bottom edges but Will see it on the top edges of items.. This seems to be a real limitation of focus shift compositions..

There is one thing I really don't understand.. why all the photos in this kind of promotional videos are so bad? I mean if you want to sell the camera you should probably show some really impressive photographs, right? Not a cookie picture that looks like a smartphone snapshot.

Great camera, but it's noisy AF. If you don't have it on a tripod with a remote release you're going to get all sorts of blur, and if you raise the iso you'll have more noise than a rock concert. Probably best to keep it to landscape work where you can leave it on iso 64 and let it chill out for a while with a long exposure. And yes, I do own one - not just snobbing from watching reviews.
