Every table saw comes with a miter gauge, and they’re made for making crosscuts and angled cuts. So why do you need a crosscut sled? There are four good reasons why a crosscut sled can improve your safety and accuracy at the table saw. Chris Marshall will show you all four in this video.
So, whether you’re crosscutting big stock or little tiny workpieces, or making repetitive cuts or angled cuts. A crosscut sled can improve your safety and accuracy at the table saw.

Im not a woodworker.....but im just curious, when do u need a cross cut sled....and when do u need to use the fence?

Generally, the fence is used for rip cuts (cuts along the length of the piece being cut) and a crosscut sled for everything else.

can't believe the sad miserable people who feel the need to give negative comment in forums like these! Especially the one's with sarcastic edge to them! God the people who make and provide these videos are only trying to share their knowledge and understanding of woodworking techniques, for the benefit of those who don't know everything and more importantly would like to learn more. If you don't like the content, presentation, haircut or anything else about what is being served up, go someplace else, and take your pig - ignorant, half baked, stupid opinions with you............nobody needs them!

Well I've found three reasons for not using a Crosscut Sled, 1st on my Multi functional table I was only able to use it with the table saw, 2nd it was not compatible with my table-top dust-collection, 3rd simply too bulky at least for my needs. My approach to crosscutting is called Crosscut Push Bar. I'am fixing the issue with bad friction by using clamps.

Putting your saw blade at an angle and then raising it up through a cross cut sled will create a large opening in the surface of the sled. It can be done, but your sled will have that larger opening from that use on. A better concept is to create a purpose made cross cut sled for just that cut. Make it from MDF for the base and some scrap wood in your shop and it will be inexpensive and effective.

Hi Chris, I cannot afford to buy a decent tablesaw of my own at the moment so I have inherited the use of my father-in-laws homemade tablesaw. He lives next door so we sometimes share tools. His tablesaw is basically a circular saw which has been clamped to the underside of a metal bench, it's pretty powerful to say the least and the table part is made of thin iron so it's fairly solid, there is also the ability to raise and lower the blade although it blade can only be used at a verticle position. Now for the bad part...... Because his table is quite thin then theres no mitre slots on the table and it measures just 47 cm across the table from left to right which is quite narrow and is 70 cm long, the slot for the blade to fit through is also only 19 cm in from the edge, so cutting long pieces or even wide pieces of lumber can be challenging, to my father-in-law of course, it's perfect as he built it over 20 years ago himself and nothing in his mind can be wrong with it, theres also no fence and his cuts are all approximate and nothing is exact, yet he thinks it's brilliant and he doesn't want anything to improve it as that would be an insult to him as he still uses it today. So by me making a sled for it would be adding a whole lot of safety to it and more importantly I will get better if not exact cuts and I can make it wider too meaning that any lumber I need cutting will easier to balance and make it easier to cut. I have just drawn a plan for it and then I came across your video, so I am going to copy your sled in part and mix it with my own ideas and at the end of the day, if he wants to use it his way without any sled for acuracy and safety then that's upto him as it can lift on and off the table thank you for the great video and the inspiration Glen Fiddich

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice kzbin.infoUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

I wish other companies had safety features like Sawstop but Bosch was sued here in states on their version..... Shame that the only possible way to stop a blade with a human body is patented ..... Wtf, everyone should want safety and not have a monopoly on it

@@MrDirtysteve75 there’s definitely a difference. One isn’t superior to the other. My neighbor is a carpenter, I’m a woodworker. He can build me a garage and I can build him a dresser. We just tend to use different tools and the scale of his projects is much bigger than mine.

Sleds on a table saw are a waste of time, space, and money. Use your miter saw. It is the correct tool for the job.

If it works, it works. There is no right or wrong in the world of jigs. If it cuts, it's accurate, and it's safe, then it's right. 🙌 Also, there are many that don't have a miter saw and consider them a waste of time, space, and money. Especially if they can do it all on their table saw with a jig that can store on the wall or behind a cabinet. To each their own, and we're here for them all. At the end of the day, if someone did some woodworking, it was a win for us all. 💙
