I always imagined four tet's sessions to be these massive complex things. Seeing how simple they actually are is inspiring, but also humbling because i understand everything that's going on here but still can't make anything that sounds nearly as good!

The most complicated and probably also most important step of a sample based production style is the sound selection itself..if it doesn’t work, dont try to make it work somehow..move on and try something different!

Pay attention. He has a large collection of hardware from which he recorded samples while playing with them. Simple as that... Having all in digital enables his creativity. Nevertheless he is inspiring behind the decks or while sharing his thinking. One of the few real artists on the electronic dance scene.

Same thing as watching a michelin-starred chef. Least amount of cuts, letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Sounds like the simplest thing in the world until you do it. All in the senses, focus, and experience. Great video.

Inspiring how he gets on with making music on a computer without getting bogged down in all the possibilities.

Four Tet is such a brilliant producer, who appears to keep things quite simple, yet manages to capture something extremely special in his creativity; something human, and easy to connect with. Always great to see him breakdown is work. Thanks for sharing the video!

great to hear such a high-profile artist so open about mostly using presets. producers have taken deadmau5’s “cardinal sin of edm” meme and run far with it, and even before that there was an elitist stigma about not designing all your own sounds. apply that logic to any other genre-do we ridicule rockers for not building their own guitars?

Master in 'don't overcomplicate it'/get distracted by the shiny toys - honestly so surprised he uses presets, always got the impression he was an avid sound designer / would be using loads of modular stuff. Inspired!

What I've taken from this, keep it simple but put in the effort. He said he chopped the guitar part heavily and he went through hundreds of presets to find the right ones, which can be quite tedious I find.

splice has that thing where you pick a sample and style of music and it will pick samples based on your initial selection. Surprised at how good they are sometimes

But it would be lovely if Kieran would really get down to the nitty gritty of something like a sine wave. Dunno, as earlier releases tend to have a bit of broader spectrum in sound. Not complaining at all though, don't get me wrong, it's obviously working, but yeah, something more adventurous would be great.

But he's just not the type of person to use complex synthesis, probably hasn't honed that skill. He never did on his earlier release either. They too were very sample heavy
