Nova and Moth are 2 songs that speak to my soul. They feel like warmth, nostalgia and sorrow all in one. The duality of Burial and Four Tet's musical atmospheres on those songs legitimately feels like therapy to me and listening to them makes me just reflect on my life and every other time I was listening to those songs, through the good and the bad. Fantastic songs, I've heard both of them in my dreams before too. Wolf cub is incredible as well and I didn't even know about it until a long time I heard Nova or Moth.

I'm surprised this didn't talk pointedly about what I think is the biggest story of how he transitioned from breaks/beats to house/techno between Everything Ecstatic and There Is Love In You. The Nothing to See single and the actual first Percussions- Bird Songs / Rabbit Songs, are right in there too, and he's basically been couched in that since but still making occasional chill beats on the albums. I see that as the real story, how he went from experimental beats to dance floor bump that still has his characteristic experimentation and high quality sound.

Great docu, thanks for compiling all this stuff, I will have to follow the rabbit hole one of these days. Four Tet has always been just on the periphery of my musical taste, in the 90's I was more into drum and bass and in the 2000's I mellowed and revisited 90's electronica like BoC, Plaid, Future Sound of London etc. When I heard New Energy and 16 Oceans it was like a convergence, but I'm sure if I go back now I will appreciate the stuff I glossed over back then. You mentioned New Energy was your favourite album but what are your top five? PS you didn't mention his excellent lockdown sets in 2020! I think he did a Boiler Room set and then also streamed as "Wingdings", in epic long sets.
@audioeats Жыл бұрын
Hmm I think my top 5 would be: 1. New Energy 2. There Is Love in You 3. Sixteen Oceans 4. Pause 5. tie between Beautiful Rewind and Morning/Evening I came across his music on Pandora maybe 10 years ago and liked it but never dug deep into his discography until he released Butterflies with Skrillex, that's what really got me going back and listening to his older stuff. And then I got to see him live last year and he blew my mind, he really takes you on a journey. By the way, if you haven't heard his collabs with Burial yet, those are a must listen!

4:32 "krautrock" isn't German for "cosmic music" - "kosmische Musik" is the German phrase for this. "Kraut" is actually a derogatory slur for German people, but before WW1 & 2, it was actually just a synonym for "sauerkraut", which is a traditional European dish consisting of fermented cabbage, often eaten in Germany.

I only listen to non vocal electronic music (everyone and a blue moon some vocal electronic music but very rare). I been this way since 2006. From 1995 when I was 0 to 2006 anytime music came on I hated it that whole time I thought I just hated music then in 2006 I heard two albums that changed my life forever Music Has The Right To Children by Boards Of Canada and Rounds by Four Tet those immediately became my two fav albums ever made and Unspoken by Four Tet immediately became my fav song ever made. Since then Isola by Rumpistol became my fav album ever made. But MHTRTC and Rounds are still 2 and 3 for me and Unspoken is still my fav song ever made. Since then I got in to hundreds of electronic artists like Aphex Twin, Orbital, The Orb, Brian Eno, Biosphere ETC… I still don’t like any other genre I like Kid A, In Rainbows, A Moon Shaped Pool, some of Ok Computer, Some of Hail To The Thief, and some of King Of Limbs by Radiohead but that’s about it. I don’t care about lyrics or vocals even with Radiohead. I know I’m weird and I have tried out all kinds of music but I just don’t like it at all. 95% of my music taste is Non Vocal electronic music (I’m not a fan of edm like calvan Harris, not really a fan of trance or house but I like some trance and house) I love downtempo, idm, ambient, piano electronic music, jazzy electronic music, minimalistic electronic music, cartoony video gamy no vocal electronic music. Love Four Tet to death Four Tet and BOC are and always will be my fav artist ever.

@@audioeats See what u think of Arovane - Lillies kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXTZh2NrarqWiZIsi=c66txg0VcM_yNQA7 Notice the depth in the track fidelity wise. The emotion. Somber. Pretty. Layered. Notice how they sound like complete songs. Notice how some sounds can be abrasive but they arent abrasive in the mix. I generally think artists like Four Tet normalize their tracks too much in mastering also which really hurts their overall depth. Working in digital and then having a mastering engineer master them for digital is like adding lpudness upon loudness but thats an entire topic itself...
@rediscoveryrecords1348 Жыл бұрын
@@audioeats not sure what happened to my other comment in reply to yours. I must have replied over it. Ugh. Anyways. I just think Four Tet doesnt come from rave or electronic background. He sounds like a former rockmusic fan making electronic music. He has no edge. No experimentalism. No tension or abstractness. It all feels false. Fake. Contrived music by a producer who tries to make cool sounds and combine them but doesnt know how to make a track flow. There is no underground or post rave feel which for me, his tracks lack any emotion. I dont thi k he knows how to write a good rhythym. Or a house or techno beat. His downtempo is weak. His sort of trap beats arent for me either. Not sure if people who like trap think his beats are. For example. I think Tycho is overated also. But i will say Tycho albums sound good and sound engineered well. Instruments soumd good in the mix. But Tycho has no edge either. Watered down BOC or Japan vs Casink style stuff. Sounds like an electronic jam band. Check out Apparat - Walls. I would be curious to know what u think of that album from 2007
