"I don't think rules change human nature, they just change how it manifests itself." This is one of the most astute observations here. The concerted efforts of religious people to downplay, sidestep or excuse the behaviors that cast doubt on their claims about how effective their systems are in ensuring morality, demonstrate how conditioned they are to avoid honest discussion or contemplation of them. It's easy to look from outside and say, "well, that's obvious, how can people go on believing things like this?" But unless you've come up in some system like that (or any other cult - and in my mind, they are all cults, some are just more socially accepted than others), the more frightening it is to consider life and thought outside of it. Whether Gianmarco considers himself "full" atheist or not is kind of beside the point; what he is, is a person with full permission to examine and come to his own conclusions about the issues being discussed. of course we are conditioned by our cultures and families as well, but outside of actually hurting another person, there is no mortal punishment for entertaining a conflicting idea. The problem with strict religious systems (and I'm not singling out Islam here), is that people go into the exploration with a preconceived notion of what the answer should be. These ideas tend to get put into our minds at such a young age -- before we have the capacity for critical thinking -- that even when we are trying to be unbiased, it's difficult. Both Christianity and Islam not only tell us what the answer is from the outset, they also lay out a pretty fearsome set of punishments for failing to believe the "right" answer. Only with that level of indoctrination could someone say that a baby suffering and dying of cancer is okay because it goes to heaven, and they God, who knows all, needed to inflict that on its parents in order to test them. He even acknowledges that it sounds fucked up. I doesn't just "sound" fucked up, it is ducked up, and the religious system doesn't allow him to say that without an immediate "but" followers by apologetics. He's arguing with his own sense of decency there. Because he obviously is a very decent person.

Hard agree! If I had a child and a person that I know and trust told me that my child who had cancer is actually just getting tested and will eventually get to go to heaven I'll tell them to fuck right off, let alone some person who supposedly existed 1500 years ago and slept with minors.

I completely agree. And I hate to say it, but Ismael's take on Islam is typical of men because the rules aren't enforced. I can't speak about his family specifically, he said they're chill, but oftentimes the families indulge the men and punish the women. Just watch the Dina Hashem episode of this podcast. She talks about how her mom hired a private investigator on her. My parents would have done the same. When you're more "comfortable" in religion and you can reap the benefits without suffering as much of the backlash, it's easier to not seek out the truth. You just decide that what you have is good enough and that it fulfills you to a degree.

@@JustLisnin2 Looked at in historical perspective Islam itself did grant women a lot more rights than the dominant society of the time. And more than some Islamic societies do today, because everybody interprets their religion through their present culture; it’s not all top-down. That is the reason we have Sunnis and Shiism, for example - two very different social orders adopted the same Islam, but adapted it to their previously held systems. But even with those differences in mind, women do tend to get the short end of the stick, because they were and have remained intensely patriarchal and patrilineal societies.

@@sazji I agree that people interpret Islam based on their culture, but I’m not sure it’s true that women got more rights across the board. Speaking from personal experience, my grandparents interpreted Islam more loosely than my parents, and women had more freedom in many respects. A lot of stories from Islam about women don’t resonate with things I know from my own Arab culture personally, but my parents adopted the (more restrictive) religious tenets and dropped the cultural ones. So it’s a mixed bag.

@@JustLisnin2 Like I said, they don’t get equal rights. At the time that Islam appeared, they got more rights than women did before that point, but we are talking a long time ago. Certainly not comparable with what any woman would reasonably expect today.

As a Muslim I also think that sex after marriage doesn't make"the marriage"better but you as a person better . Like when you control yourself or think of sex as smth not to do nonchalantly. Also sex after marriage actually better because if anything happens like the woman gets pregnant or smth like that it's recorder or known by a lot of people and the man can't run away and they both will get what they deserve

my husband grew up muslim and we got married at age 20 (him) and 21 (me). we’d been dating since we were 16/17 and have been friends since 10/11 so we knew each other really well and fully trusted each other. we eloped so we could have better financial aid which allowed me to attend uc berkeley on a full scholarship for my last two years. everyone assumes we’re religious because we got married at such a young age when in reality our relationship was pretty mature and it was extremely convenient for us at the time. we got each others names tattooed on our left ass cheeks for our 6 month anniversary, so now i’ll have an extremely muslim name on my ass for the rest of my life (also the name of a prophet i think).
