I know disabled people and disabled artists need to just be treated the same as every other person and artist, but they still aren't, and I still don't see enough of this, so thank you for doing this episode. It doesn't mean much to you, but it certainly means a lot to me, and maybe, someday, I can be on shows like yours too

I really appreciate Ryan sharing his experience at the dr. I feel like it’s a good illustration of the “medical model” of disability and some of its limitations and problems. The “medical model” looks for whatever is “wrong” or “abnormal” to “fix” in a person (makes sense for diseases, for disability not so much) whereas the “social model” views that a person is disabled by the way our society has been structured to cater to one particular way of thinking, communicating, and moving through the world, and leads to barriers for some people being able to access and participate fully in their community (in simplest terms think lack of curb cuts or ramps at the local school or town hall or websites filled with images without audio captions/descriptions for screen readers, etc.)

I've never felt more uncomfortably seen than when everyone looked at the camera in the beginning of the episode, I'm just sitting on my couch trying to enjoy my lunch alone lol

I've been going through your episodes in reverse chronological order since I found them. Thank you for posting them in video format because I can't listen to podcasts. This was such a good episode. Also, you pronounced "Haddad" right in the Arabic sense, though Ryan can pronounce it however he wants since it's his name.

Also, fun fact, “Haddad” means “Smith” in Arabic.

I am a queer multiple disabled person who uses a cane and sometimes walker or wheelchair. I would watch Ryan Haddad podcast every week where he calmly, rationally, and interestingly explains disability theory in a way that is accessible and from a point of view that is, as he says, underheard.

An old coworker of mine used to work at Apple and would take women’s phones into the back to transfer data and would send photos and videos they’ve taken to himself. So creepy.

1:22:10 - i like segments on podcasts and i like this has gotta stop. My suggestion is that one of the hosts always prepares theirs first so that the guest has time to think about one or maybe the guest just comments on what the hosts say

Really enjoyed this one. Could see Ryan and Gianmarco in a future iteration of "American Horror Story". Make it happen! Also, and on a more personal note, Ryan reminds me of a late friend in just about every way. I miss him and seeing this made me recall our friendship. ☺

I think that's a great story, the gay doc story, because it's similar to trans stories. Like some people are like you have to be a mind reader and know everything, and they're usually assholes themselves, but most people just want to be seen as human. Trans people don't mind generally casual misgendering in the sense that, it's like a thing. It's sucks but people, especially people who know you have an idea about you in your head. But if you're in a place of care and responsibility, that matters. And you should definitely not assume shit. It'd be like if a transwoman goes to a hospital and the doc assumes she's straight and says there's a hunky doc to see. It's like, no lol.

The JO Guardian discussion reminds me of a convo I had with a friend on stream a few years ago about the concept of Shit Twins. Where every person on earth had someone who pooped for them and vice versa. We had a half hour discussion that's recorded somewhere about how it would effect society

Gianmarco, the reason they ask is because they have to. It's not curiousity, they have to be because of liability. Some airlines make it a part of their policy (hence liability issue) to offer courtesy to their customers for various reasons (death in family being one) also air carriers are bound legally to uphold certain obligations not just those imposed by themselves or as a means of competition (not bereavement but under other circumstances such as natural and man-made disasters they do have to comply by distinguishing qualifying customers). For these reasons and perhaps others cust serv agents have to ask and act sympathetic. But you knew this so just general FYI. For why you can't cancel, the tickets are priced for the whole trip in consideration. If you book a fare and it's priced thinking you will return, if you cancel the return the initial fare you paid becomes incorrect in the sense that the taxes included in the ticket are wrong and the considerations of the fare class you book are also wrong i.e. you may have accessed a fare class only available to those who would be doing a round trip. To illustrate what I mean, take taxes. Some taxes are due per trip. So you pay it once for a round trip or once for a one-way. So if you book the round trip and cancel, do they refund you half the tax but still pay over the full tax to the government? Sorting out taxes for refunds can be a headache for this reason. It's usually avoided by fare rules which prohibit splitting the ticket half way through the journey. Which results in your restriction. Another example is that some fares are made available literally to take up space on the returning flight. Say a carrier knows that on the return time you choose they just won't have enough people to have a full (or even half full)flight back anyway (due to historical data) so they'll offer you a round trip with the return at a low cost (cause they know they'll have the space anyway). This drives the price up for their remaining fares for the return so they have fewer seats(which matches their expectations) but at higher prices(which increases their profits, win-win). Your refund would screw that up putting back inventory where they don't want it and making your one-way ticket price (though they sold it to you as a round trip) half refundable. This is not universal and there are probably loads of other scenarios but after doing check-in for 5 years and reservations and ticketing 2.5, I've had enough nightmarish ticket refunds to see a bit of the reasons why things are the way they are(ever tried building a ticket from scratch including all the taxes? No, not fun). Unfortunately, if you book everything as a one-way you'd be losing money. Ah, there're no good solutions...😔

Thanks for the explanation. Helps to understand, although it still seems like a problem created by the airline because they overcomplicated the way they price tickets in the first place.

I waited to get the vaccine because I wanted there to be enough to go around for people who could not stay home. I waited until people started to get boosted. I lost a lot of mobility because I wasn't going to pain therapy appointments because they were closed. Because I hurt so much, I didn't move enough, and it got worse and worse. I spent 2 weeks seeing people I haven't seen in up to over a decade. Then, I went back to isolation because I let someone start using my body with a 9-month lease. Nobody was able to say, "Hey, you need a mobility aid," until I had a surprise hospital stay, unrelated to COVID, and they told me to get a walker. My logder was evicted for damaging my property. I'm still not strong enough to walk much more than 1 lap around the block without my cane or walker or occasionally my chair. If I need my chair, I'm usually not going.
