You may not agree but I really think this is about the best record ever to come out of Motown. It has everything from the perfect backing of the Funk Brothers to The Haunting background vocals by the andantes and the amazing sound of holland-dozier-holland who can basically do no wrong as songwriters. And of course the astounding vocals of the Four Tops particularly the one and only Levi Stubbs, full of passion that is just this side of passing over into insanity. If this song doesn't give you Goosebumps the first time you hear it, you're probably already dead.
@blujay9191 Жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. You mentioned the Funk Brothers but James Jamerson deserves to be mentioned by name for the phenomenal bass playing in this tremendous song. (Edit.. I just remembered 'Can't Get Next To You' by The Temptations. It's a dead heat. Photo finish. Too close to call.)

There were a lot of great male singers at Motown but for me Levi was the best. One thing that set him apart was that he was a baritone and most of the others were tenors. He had amazing power and sang with such intensity. The Four Tops story about their lifelong friendship and that Levi wouldn’t go solo are so inspiring when you consider how things behind the scenes went with so many other groups.
