This is the best game in the entire universe made my humans. I love this game so much I live in an underground fortress. I have to bribe my local land inspectors to ensure its security. I eat mushrooms I find underground. I have terminal cancer and will be buried in a sarcophagus. My son has never played this game. But he likes where we live so him and his wife and 2 kids are going to move down here when I pass away. I have to pay my live in nurse more then usual to ensure her discretion.

I might be going mad, but I think the zoning description is off at 3:47. When setting a Water Source zone, the tiles that are considered a 'source of water' are not the water tiles (or more accurately, not the tiles that contain water one z-level below them). Rather, the solid surface tiles that neighbor a water tile become the usable squares in a Water Source zone. Thus, in the example, dwarves would *technically* be zoned to both drink from the well and the river directly. Now, I realize this is pedantic as all get out (especially since dwarves default to wells first). But since fishing zones act the same way, this description of zones may (in odd circumstances) lead to fisherdwarves fishing out a well.... which happened to one of my forts a few years ago and took me forever to figure out....

Finally learned to use a pump. Would love videos about using mills, and how to create books

books are kinda random. If you already have a library, what Ive found helps your scholars and scribes actually visit the library is to build a lever in the library for each scholar and scribe. Do not connect these levers to anything. use the menu to assign a lever to each scholar and scribe. Finally, go into your labors screen, and make sure everything but lever pulling is disabled from your scribe/scholars. Order a job to flip each lever, put it on repeat, high priority. This keeps your scholars and scribes from wandering too far from the library. Now you just wait for the dwarves to become inspired. eventually they will start debating and writing if you have the materials. I dont ever try to manufacture the paper products. I just request them from the caravans. craftsdwarf shop to make scroll rollers. Libraries kind of take awhile to get going, many dwarves that would make good scholars, unfortunately make good doctors as well. Due to the fact that not having a job in the library causes them to hang out elsewhere, not debate/read/write, the lever solution means that the dwarf is useless while scholaring. You can manage the levers to make them do doctoring. I dont have actual math, but id put the lever solution at a 400% increase of written works, over just assigning dwarves. I usually scour the dwarves for ones that have personalities that favor social and curiosity/learning. angry, stubborn dwarves can start library fights, held books are heavy, and sometimes artifacts can be deadly. I make 2 libraries. one open to the public, storing only copies of the books that I keep as Civ only. usually with guard animals, to prevent theft of originals. A single Civ only one is good too if werebeast visitors are a concern.

I allways avoided pumps myself for all the setup they need. My go-to well is basically a contraption of floodgates and levers from the bottom layer of the river into a passage, and then another floodgate into the reservoir that would be used as the source for the well; then I have another passage with a floodgate in the bottom of the well connecting to my crops, so I can discharge the water of the well when it gets muddy, and then I use it to create soil underground. I make sure to close the doors into the field rooms to avoid the water coming out of them. After that, I just reopen the floodgate into the first passage so the water fills the well again, close it, and then reopen the river floodgate to refill the passage water. I found that step-by-step processes in DF work best for me, as it let's you take control of situations and not find yourself in a dire situation during a siege, for example. My trap corridors are somewhat similar, with several sections separated by floodgates, and even an optional path for when the traps are just not enough (titans, bronze colossus, dragons, etc.) to eventually flood them in lava. I also thought of throwing zombies into enemies by setting cages along the corridors, but then I would need to recatch them with cage traps.

That sounds pretty much like my setup too, except I never use floodgates: while they do act instantly they can still jam if any debris travels across them, so I use 1x1 or 1x2 drawbridges instead I'd also recommend digging a 3-tier cistern/reservoir beneath your well, 2 or 3 z-levels deep each, & always keep the top layer empty. Muddy/stagnant water will be cleaned by falling thru the empty space, hence reducing the chance of infected wounds etc

That the point what i needed. As a new player i needed to make a well to underground lake using well, fail already two times because it was not clear for me that i cant use standard dig, just that duble slop. At least i menage to do this by myself, but as new player that was confusing for me

I usually just channel the river/brook down down down and use the ol' dwarven science trick of resetting water pressure at my desired layer.
