I've tried both Grinder and drill methods. I like the grinder better, but I've had to use the drill many times. To avoid denting the metal so much, I use a clamp like a vice or pliers to press the side of the rivet's hammered side into the hole I drilled. I keep doing it until it fits through, and with the right size of drill and clamp, I can pull out the rivet without the use of a punch. It takes a lot longer, so I only ever use the drill method when I have no washer, or just can't afford to damage the metal and what's around it. My grinder is quite cumbersome at times, so if I try to avoid the drill method when I may need it, I end up scratching up the metal a bit.

That power file is a monster. Looks like a good choice for this job. Thanks for demonstrating!

My pleasure, they're relatively cheap and are great at their job.

Of all the rivet removal videos I have watched this afternoon, this is my favorite. I am not a fan of creating a bigger hole with a drill bit, then having to find a rivet that will fill the bigger hole.

Glad it was helpful.

another YT video also show using cold chisel shearing the rivet off. I like your idea. put extra washer to facilitate future removal if any.

Got a question for you- how about with the Napoleonic Brass rivets? were they done the same way like in Cuirassiers breast plates? If Im in wrong era for you- apologies--- just doing some research and figured I would ask you as well while I dig into papers to see if you had any info knowledge or resources Bravo and as always- THANK YOU for the content!

Ok, what if you don’t have access to the back of the rivet and the rivet is in a rebated hole ?

Did it really take about a second to take that material down with the electric file?

mine runs off of an air compressor, one of the best tools when i do armor work, you just have to be careful not to take away too much material.

Not in this case, that's a bit of editing, I think I may have forgotten to fade in and out to show it. It takes about 5-10 seconds. But as mentioned by TheAssassin409 just go steady or you can remove more than you bargained for.

Everything this guy did do not do unless you want your part scraped.

I'm interested. What makes you say that? Although this video is quite old now. I've used techniques like these for 12 years and am yet to leave anything scraped or damaged.
