When checking the vacuum actuator, with the actuator removed, couldn't you leave the vacuum hoses connected and watch the shaft move in an out, while switching back and forth from two wheel to four wheel drive?

Ditch the vacuum lines and go old school manual hubs. It works great.

I have a 2005 f150 and the 4wd suddenly stopped working. Swapped the solenoid (only has 1) not that, swapped the shift motor, not that, checked the switch for resistance after watching this and getting .64 in 2wd, around .36 in 4h and .1ish in 4L Looks like the switch is the culprit. Giing to tey and source one tomorrow and see!

You missed a couple of other things that are needed, at least for the 2001 model but I think it would be the same and that is that you need to have your foot on the brake peddle and it needs to be in Neutral, so those switches also need testing because nothing will happen if they don't work.

I got lucky, pulled the switch cover off 05 Excursion stuck in 4x4. switch works fine, the plastic cap needs replacing, it slips over the switch shaft small hairline cracks.

If I've had a manual hub conversion done, how can I convert the switch et al to a lever on the tunnel? I'd like to bypass the inevitable failure of the vacuum lines.

I tested my 4wd selector switch and found small connectivity on 4L but none for 2H and 4H. I assume the switch is blown. Otherwise, multimeter shows power coming in via the connector cables. This seemed to have happened after I had recently replaced the car battery. Before the change of battery, 4wd was working. Could there have been a short circuit in the system that I should be looking for before just replacing the 4wd selector switch and risking the same problem?

Ok. I have a 2009 F-150. I don't have a switch. It has a lever. But will not engage 4 wheel drive. Will everything else be the same on checking it other than the switch and selector motor on the transfer case?

Great video, very well presented. When the TCM is suspected, how do you test the TCM on a 2002 Ford Explorer? Selection lights on dash go on then off.

My 4wd selector switch has got 6 pins and it's the same part as the switch that controls the cabin ac fan. I don't know how to get those resistance readings on those as they are not what you've specified but I've swapped both to run the fan and they both work except that when used on the 4wd selector they do not seem to do anything to show indications in my dashboard. I've checked that there is power coming into the 4wd switch and that's all but no visible effect otherwise and certainly not showing any indicators on the dashboard. Where else to check if nothing is showing on the dashboard?

Ford f150 2004 changed the transfer case because the 4x4 doesn't go on. But now I put it on and it says 4x4 low and the truck drives slowly and doesn't go off anymore. What can I do?

I have a question. If the front 4x4 differential is working properly, should both front tires be locked and spinning at the same time or is it a limited slip type of spin. I ask because the last time I took my 2003 Ford Explore 4.6 4x4 XLT, I got stuck in the sand and notice on both Hi and Low 4x4, only one front tire spun. Both front tires were not spinning at the same time. If I remember correctly, when I pressed 4x4 high, only the front right tire spun and when I pressed 4x4 low, only the left front spun. Please help.
