That stretch of west Florissant road goes between highway 270 to its north and highway 70 to its south. A Fortune 500 company, Emerson electric, is right off that road and very close to where mb died. Just past the southern border of ferguson is westfall shopping center. Target closed two years ago and it still includes its other anchor, a schnucks grocery store. It was rehabbed from the old northland shopping center, an innovative boom mall in the 60’s that fell to decay in the 90’s. What people don’t know about this part of St. Louis county is that it’s scattered with towns microscopic in size, with small governments that can’t support the demand of neighborhoods that appear neglected. Normandy school district is one of the smaller school districts by land size, yet include 24 separate municipalities. Some of the municipalities hold their own police force, and have difficulty hiring reputable officers cause of the lower salary offers. This leads to corruption. The shirt on the man says “prove them wrong”. I don’t know what angle he takes this at, but this community has every opportunity to make itself better. It will take a lot of effort though. How bad do they want it?
@JerzCe736 жыл бұрын
You seem to be familiar with this particular area. Were you raised near here? Do you know anyone from this actual part of town? Are they employed by Emerson Electric? See, there is many Fortune 500 companies that reside in lower income areas...Usually because the taxes are lower. Also, they may be the last standing of a by gone era...Very rarely do they hire from these communities (Oh, you may say due to "Them not wanting to work" or "These Criminal") I will say due to (Racism and Over policing that insures arrest records) Either way to mention a company that does nothing for the community it occupies is moot..
@snolen896 жыл бұрын
Aseenah Rasulalah yes I did grow up just north of there in a neighboring community, so I do know the area well enough. Where the Ferguson incident occurred was in the jurisdiction of the high school I attended. Emerson was only a small mention of what I wrote there. What you need to know is that they established their presence there when those communities were majority Caucasian. Even with the decay and increase in poverty/crime, they continue to maintain their presence in that location. They could have easily moved to St. Charles county like other local companies have. Technically if they wanted it bad enough the residents in that area could be employed by Emerson... or any other company in the metro area. They aren’t going to be handed the job though. People in these communities also have every right to change how where they live operates. They can vote to disincorporate or merge towns. More recently, several towns have merged one single cooperative police department to serve their areas. There is much potential with these areas. People need to want it though and follow the guidelines. IMHO, the media and various civil rights leaders steer them in the wrong direction.
@JerzCe736 жыл бұрын
Yes, I use Emerson as an example because I have seen companies stay as the surroundings fall into disrepair. I do not think we agree on the reason for this. Continuing to stay isn't philanthropy, especially if the residents aren't benefiting from such a large organization..I wonder what the taxes are there in Ferguson vs. St. Charles? You said "technically they can be hired by Emerson if they want it bad enough" which is generalization that is use to blame poverty solely on the poor. No one is asking for a handout, but an active participating in the betterment of the community as a whole. This is nothing new, when companies negotiate to operate in towns, cities,states there is an agreement to try to employ a percentage of its residents. Now, I can get into the work around for companies, so they dont have to uphold that standard..such as, cronyism, nepotism and outrageous standards for lower rung jobs. It is also clear that poor people are more likely to have arrest records and People of Color that are poor even more so. Now, I am somewhat familiar with "disincorporate or merge towns." situations from a personal view. I have lived in a town that is surrounded by Middle Class/Upper Middle cities. One of them being Cleveland proper. These cities offered to "Seize parks" that bordered the city or wanting to implement high property taxies on existing residents who "homeowners" struggling to hold on their property, as is. I wont get into gentrification and the ousting of people that love their city and neighborhoods.
@snolen896 жыл бұрын
Aseenah Rasulalah no one told anyone to do something illegal and create themselves an arrest record. That was their own decision, as was MB’s on the day he was killed. All he had to do was follow the cops suggestion to walk on the sidewalk instead of the middle of the street. Speaking of, he was living with his grandma at the time of the incident. She rented an apartment. Did not pay property taxes, just monthly rent. Those areas, including the neighborhood I grew up in, have spiked with an increase of rental properties in recent years. Landlords let the homes go to decay. Property values drop. Communities receive less tax flow, and the result is what you have from these towns trying to generate revenue in other ways all these years. And yes, if an individual wants to be successful and want something bad enough, they need to not only put the work in, but be smart about it. Graduate high school, have kids after 20 and have kids after marriage. These communities have kids out of wedlock at a rate of over 70%. It’s almost to the point where it’s encouraged to do so. Women can marry the government instead of a father figure, regardless of influence on a child. These folks likely don’t pay taxes on homes or cars. Many cars you see in those streets aren’t properly registered and due to backlash there is little the state can do about it. Emerson can employ whoever they want if they are qualified.
