Do you always comment about how great of a rifle your budget build is compared to an "expensive" rifle, brand name company? This series is for you. We will upload weekly upgrades and results of all the aftermarket goodness that comes with buying your first AR-15 and the mad dash to assemble a "badass" rifle and see if it competes with something "higher end." This time we are looking at Optics, specifically the Red Dot.

For furniture I would consider an MOE Fixed or adjustable Carbine Stock, A Magpul MIAD grip, and a Daniel Defense FSP RIS II. If you change the gas block to one that does not have a front sight, then I would say use a Daniel Defense RIS II. I know that M-LOK and KeyMod slick rails are seen as the better rail options over 1913 styled rails but a 1913 quad rail gives a new shooter a complete layout for attachments on their rifle while also eliminating the decision making the user has to do when choosing mounting options and fiddling with those mounting options when attaching their accessories. A DD full quad rail also gives the user a rail system that will move along with them, if they choose to bring the rail, as they get more expensive rifles.

The reason why people like myself buy the MP is because of value. Cheap and solid. Obviosily most purchasers of such a product cant afford a $400-600 optic.

After I saw a Holosun literally get shot and still run, I realized that they optics game is not the same scene we had in 2005. The only thing most companies like Trijicon and Aimpoint have these days is that they are "proven". But all it takes is time for newer companies to "prove" that their designs can compete. In the next decade, Trijicon, Aimpoint, Eotech, etc. won't be able to justify optics over 200 bucks since the standards are changing. Not bashing using higher priced optics. It is just natural for industry standards and prices to change over time. Red dots are no exception.

I like this series, and i think you'll end up spending just as much if not more money making this rifle compete with a "super high end" rifle. I assume this series is mainly focused on newer shooters, or people new to AR's, and i mostly agree with what you say about buy once cry once, but consider this: Buying a cheap rifle and assembling the goodies as you go allows you to get into it and start shooting BEFORE spending $3,000. Lets face it a very small % of the people who own these rifles can run them well enough for it to matter if it has all the best gadgets. Personally I don't have the skill for it to matter, and doubt i would see much of a difference in MY performance between a Daniel Defense and a M&P (optics aside). As far as "building it the way you want it", I again doubt very much someone just getting into it really knows what they want. I say buy a cheap gun and run it until it limits your abilities.

A fighting rifle needs good sights to assist accuracy, reliable magazines, a sling for retaining the rifle and possibly as a shooting aid, and a white light for identifying targets in the dark. A sling and a white light should be closer to the top of the upgrade list. A flashlight doesn't have to cost $300 but it should be shock resistant, lightweight, be light enough, be positioned where it is easy to actuate and doesn't occupy a bunch of the handguard, and have momentary press actuation. A two point quick adjustable sling like the Ferro Concepts slingster or the Ares Armor Amentum / Husky sling retain the rifle when you transition to the pistol and can be used as a shooting aid. I do think that starting with a midlength gas system is better and doesn't cost significantly more.

In 2019 name brand budget optics work great, they just don't have crazy long battery life unless its halosun. I put a Spark ar on mine just because its just as good and got ammo instead because shooting its more fun than spending money. In the end i used the sport 2 for home defense but sense replaced it with a ddm4v7 a rifle i would spend money to outfit with high end parts and use the sport 2 as a back up rifle.

If you want to keep the front sight base the Troy Delta rail is a good option for a lot less weight than the DD rail. If you want a quad rail then Troy also has a the Charlie rail but I don't know if there's any weight savings over the DD rail, and the DD rail definitely has a stronger mounting interface with the rifle. For furniture I prefer BCM stocks and Magpul grips. I'm weird that way.
