I agree with you Shelton Whitney. I venture to say that this version has merits that sets it apart from the one the Isley Brothers recorded. Here are some of the reasons: Chaka Khan vocals are extremely in good taste and respectful of the contours of the melody, the background voices are placed in thirds fifths, and unison very strategically and in very good taste, and the musical arrangement it's a lot smoother. Chaka Kahn IS the best, however, as in MOST cases, IMO, rarely does anyone else's version beat the original singer-song-writer's version, whom, in this case, are the equally legendary Isley Brothers. Oh, we're looking back and listening to this now in 2021 but things were so much better back when this was "real time". How many of us were listening to Ms. Khan when she anchored or fronted Ask Rufus or had songs composed for her by Prince? Some of us go back to the 70's and 80's with her at least, and certainly with Bob James....who composed TV's Angela theme song. We watched Larry back in the 80's at the Record Plant in LA. Oh, yeah, we're still listening and watching at this late date, thanks to the good Lord above.
