Initially they were all recruited from Scandinavia (as the emperor at the time didn't trust Greeks to guard him), and then after the Norman conquest Anglo-Saxons were recruited. Eventually Greeks were recruited and by the end of the empire I think it was mostly made up of Greeks. Dunno how many Greeks were in the guard during the 13th century though, so it could have still been a Northern European force at that time.
@Legionaer6667 жыл бұрын
They were (at least at the beginning) Scandinavians. Vikings tried to take the city. They failed but the emperor was so impressed by their fighting capabilities that he hired them as his personal guard.

Jabzy, if you were to pick one battle throughout any period of history which would be the most interesting?
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
I suppose Talas is probably one of the more famous ones from the early middle ages. But for a more unknown battle I'd say Brunanburh. In fact, some of my earlier videos were 'history lists' (they were pretty poor) but they usually revolved around lesser known battles and leaders. I should probably bring them back.

The Byzantines were Roman, Greek, and had struggled for centuries until its very end. It's only natural that there are many Byzantophiles.
@user-sd8ec5jv2z7 жыл бұрын
Nobody ever talks about Byzantium... Textbooks look over it, with the exception of its fall. The empire was perhaps the most important in Europe, keeping up with the Arabs in science, philosophy, math, and art while Europe was struggling to become centralized. The Byzantines never deserves what they got, they were back stabbed by the very people that they had kept safe for a millennium.

There was no Croatia in the 14 ct.
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
The Kingdom of Croatia lasted until the 16th Century. It was just in a personal union with Hungary.
@lordnicholasbuzanthefearle21557 жыл бұрын
Jabzy That is Croatian propaganda. The document on which this "union" was based is called "Pacta conventa" which is a 14 Cent. forgery. Still I must commend you Jabzy on making these videos. I am glad that you returned your 3 Minute History series. I would like if you could make a video about the Bosnian uprising in the 19 Cent. It fits conveniently in your 3 minute time frame Subbed !
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
Cheers, but are you saying the entire Kingdom of Croatia has just been made up and all historians have fallen for it? I mean sure the Pacta Conventa was a forgery, but that doesn't mean the Kingdom didn't exist.
@lordnicholasbuzanthefearle21557 жыл бұрын
Jabzy Well maybe because the terminology which was used all this time was based on a 14 Cent. piece of paper forged specifically to represent Croatia as a equal political entity equal to Hungary which is a ludicrous assumption.
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say they were on an equal footing but theres a great deal of evidence to say it existed.
