It might have the opposite effect 4 international airports on an island of that size, they would need large amounts of tourists and local using it to cover the operating costs which would be immense and that’s just one of them.

Make an investment in infrastructure. The more airports the more people will get decent jobs. This is a very wonderful idea. If Vernamfield comes on board that would make the south coast more accessible. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

I love probing questions like these, investigating Jamaica's growth and development. I believe Jamaica will get a fourth international airport eventually... either in Negril or Vernamfield. Negril is an tourist area; while Vernamfield is in Clarendon, which is not a tourist area. An international airport in Negril would definitely add to the tourism appeal there, and of course improve the infrastructure and developments over there. It would also help alleviate the strain off Sangster International Airport, which is currently going through its own wave of developments. This would also open up more of Western Jamaica logistically, allowing Negril to have its own stream of direct traffic and not being so reliant on Montego Bay. Vernamfield is close to May Pen, and May Pen is a town that has grown and developed considerably. The airstrip there is large, and the potential workforce in the nearby May Pen is large; so on principle they could facilitate an airport that would rival that of SIA and NMIA. May Pen is primarily an agricultural and a growing industrial town, which in the long-term could support their plans to make Vernamfield International (Aerotropolis) focus more on cargo transport and regional trade. However, there are other places in the Caribbean also trying to start up a development of this nature, so there is some need for this. This is something Jamaica could capitalize on; giving them a competitive edge. In my opinion, I'd prefer more focus to be on Vernamfield. A development of that nature could really put Jamaica on the map and diversify its current offerings. And unlike Negril, May Pen already has world class highways leading to, from and through it; so logistically it has the commuting advantage. On a more tourism side, Ian Fleming International has just now started to pick up international traffic, and I think resources should allocated to developing THAT (which would help the growing area of greater Ocho Rios) rather than building another brand new tourist focused international airport. Meanwhile Negril, which isn't nearly as developed as Ocho Rios (in my opinion), doesn't have the same amount of growth prospects. They are just NOW considering to give it an urban center too; meaning urban Negril is comparatively still in its infancy. It also seems a little too much to have two upstart international airports leaning heavily to the tourism angle, and diversifying the economy is key to a country's growth. Jamaica should not rely too much on tourism for development. I say Vernamfield is the way to go.

I flew out of this airport to Kingston in1978 heading to the One Love Concert at National Stadium. This would be great for all the new hotels in Hanover, of course Negril and the rest of the South Coast.

What major international airport doesn't suffer from overcrowding and long lines? During peak times, it comes with the territory. IT'S International both on the airport side and the airline side. That's how they make money.

I support a 4th n 5th international Airport......Negril would certainly be a side piece to Sangster...this would ease the pressure currently exists at Sangster. Vernamfield on the other hand would be ideal for central Jamaica as that part of Jamaica is the only region without an airport. Major cities such as Old Harbour, May Pen n Mandeville nearby would benefit. Also ideal for cargo.

God bless Jamaica land we love!" The progress being made by this Government is great. If Jamaicans want to be ungrateful and put the other side in, then good for them. As a pensioner I never saw a cent increase under pnp. What a difference every year now!!! WOW!!😂😅😊🙏👍✌🤜🤛💖

What does this government have achieved because of the PNP government? All the highway development that Andrew Holness continues all started by the previous government, Montego Bay Airport redevelopment is because PJ Patterson privatized the Airport in 2003, MBJ Airport limited, operates Sangster International Airport through a 30 years concession agreement with the Government of Jamaica. You can Google this information? All those Spanish hotels building on the north coast are because of PJ Patterson going to Spain to get Spanish investors to come to Jamaica? Did you know PJ Patterson got an award from the King of Spain? There's an article on the Jamaica Information Service website : PM Patterson gets Spanish award. March 25, 2006. The master mind of all these Highways development in Jamaica is PJ Patterson and Kingsley Thomas? The company that the previous government contracted to do the highways alignment, design and blueprint is a Stanley Consultant from the United States Of America. Example: Montego Bay perimeter Road, the blueprint was done by Stanley Consultant? Andrew Holness even made jokes in Parliament the previous government makes all the plans and he will do the work. 😊 😂

Great segment ! Thank you. A Airtropolis, would be greatest for Vernamfield; rather than an AirPort for regular air planes; because it would have the space to handle huge cargo, storage, cold storage shipment, and trans shipment for the wider caribbean .. Would also be a great storage facility for disaster preparation cargo storage as well! Your thoughts?

Definitely, if it's feasible to build an international airport in Negril, it would be a game changer. It would take pressure off Sangster and even more passengers would come. I think it would worth the investment.

it is kind of interesting they call Ian Fleming an international airport .when it comes to the US only AA American Arilines flying there and it depends on which state you in.lol and.it best take an umbrella with you because if rain falling when your flight land or going to board you gonna get soaked .it is the old fashon way of disembarking/deplaning and boarding.

First thing the Negril Aerodrome is in Hanover not Westmoreland. Check the parish boundary, and you will see, that Hanover should get the credit. The things one has to consider is which would be easier and more cost-efficient to build since the needed bypasses of Hopewell and Lucea along with the near complete Montego Bay bypass could cut the travel time down considerably to where it might be not so important as the huge cost of extending the runway and facilities to accommodate large jets like the ones that land at MoBay. Due to the short runways, these large jets cannot land at Negril, and even at Sir Ian Fleming aka Ocho Rios Airport, in St Mary. It sounds great for the government to tell people they want to build, yet in reality the runway is only about 25% of what is needed, so to get it up to even Norman Manley standard, and extending it into the Morass swamp may also in time hurt the very beach that it would service. What really is a better move, if they want to take pressure off Sangster's International is to extend the runway of Sir Ian Fleming to make large jets land there, as even with the recent upgrade it is still too short and do Vernamfield to a standard like Sangster as it has the room for the runway length needed.

This was always there. Use to be very busy with 3 flights per day. It was called air jamaica express. early morning flights to montego bay connecting to kingston, a midday flight straight from Tensen Pen and another evening flight. Don't know why it was closed down. This was very active in the late 70's 80's and 90's.

I am not against upgrades to Negril Aerodrome, I think adding flights to Negril and Ocho Rios will be a relief to busy Sangster International Airport but Jamaica needs a big airport with 2 active runways, currently all airports in Jamaica lacks a second a second active runway. Jamaica must look forward to the future because capacity will not decrease. A bigger airport will also open the island up to layovers from long haul flights(passenger or cargo) . Lastly, one must consider that a huge part of Negrils tourism economy which is almost unique from the other hotspots on the island is the fragile biodiversity or Negril and also the inability to do massive future upgrades as is the case with the current airport's. There comes a time when you can only do so much with so little and no matter what you do if the capacity is present any upgrades to the same space is just a waste. Think about Sangsters International if the land was present to build a second runway.

Great news if it becomes a reality! On an another note, the main road in Negril all the way to Montego Bay is a total disgrace! How can a major resort town and major foreign exchange earner look this dilapidated and run down! This road should have been given priority before the St. Thomas leg. It must be brought up to world standard as quickly as possible!

They are Cessna 206s also called Stationairs, with added underside cargo pods. Yes, I hope it’s developed as a reliever airport to Sangster. I flew into MoBay in May and had to wait in line for over an hour to be processed. Parts of the corridor were quite hot. The departure line , wasn’t as painful, but still could use refinement. Ridiculous! Nice vid!
