I really couldn't finish fourth wing. The protagonist is probably the Mary Sue to end all Mary Sue characters and about 90% of the books plot is blatantly copied from other books. I mean brown and silver haired protagonist with lightning powers (Red Queen) who is disabled and struggles to ride a dragon (Dragon School) in the dragon school that has four sections and her love interest is the leader who initially dislikes her and ends up helping her (Divergent), who also has shadow powers (ACOTAR and like ten other books). She also lives in a country with seven provinces, that has built a WARD (wall) around its borders to stop an enemy that we later learn about. This enemy is ruled by a Sage (night king) who creates these venin, monsters that are destroyed only by a special material (valerian steel) which the cadets are forging into blades! (Game of Thrones). And that's just a few books on top of my head T_T So all in all it has a complete Mary Sue protagonist and not a single original plot line. I did like the writing style and the dragons but that's about it...

The weight of a sword, from what I've read, comes from what it's made of and the type of sword it is. Some swords, like you said, are lighter than they appear. Some, because of types of steel or the type of blade, can be quite weighty. Also, if you are talking forging in a middle ages-esque fantasy world, they might not be able to get the forges hot enough to burn enough of the dross away and thus have to make them heavier in order to make them sturdy enough to take regular use. Backscabbers however, preach it. Admittedly, they're kinda cool to look at, but for actual use, dumb as hell.
@wingracer1614 Жыл бұрын
Most swords are around 1.5 to 3 pounds. A small side sword can be extremely light and easy to wield, even less than 1 pound that even a small child could wield. The biggest, heaviest, most extreme swords for actual combat (not decorative or ceremonial) get up to maybe 8 pounds. Yeah, a small, weak person would be unable to wield something like that effectively but they could still lift it.
@lalaithan Жыл бұрын
From someone who likes to practice kali espada y daga (sword & dagger), I like this answer. Our bladed weapons are dull and aluminum or steel but I can see how "IRL" you would need something much sturdier and therefore heavier.

There was one thing in particular that really took me out of Gideon the Ninth. When Harrow tries to pick up Gideon's sword, and it's too heavy for her to lift! All the way I'd pictured a regular longsword, and suddenly I had to retrofit in a whole slew of justifications before I could go on: Gideon is actually carrying a massive Final Fantasy style greatsword, Harrow is exhausted/distraught/very tiny, something something (the author has no idea about swords) whatever. Okay.
@ninnusridhar Жыл бұрын
Feel what you wanna feel, but in gideon's defense it's mentioned multiple times that her prefered weapon is a heavy two hander. And further it's hammered home time after time that necromancers are inherently weak. Death magic doesn't keep strong humans. Harrow is tiny even for a necromancer. So this is a 5'6 maybe 5'7 individual with a particularly weak physique. And the main issue with a greatsword isn't the weight but the form factor of the weight. They can be awkward.
@Fredurix Жыл бұрын
@@ninnusridhar The author may know her swords and have had a clear and distinct idea of what kind of sword Gideon used, but as used today "longsword" most commonly refers to a sword that while usually wielded with two hands isn't all that big or heavy. So it's not unreasonable for me to get a different impression and a bit of mental whiplash.
@marocat4749 Жыл бұрын
Its fitting if harrow is physicaly weak and gideon buff and to get that cross, nd that gideon ikes big swords.
@wingracer1614 Жыл бұрын
@@ninnusridhar She should still be able to lift it. It may be too big and heavy for her to wield effectively but she should be able to lift it. The biggest, heaviest sword ever made for actual combat can be lifted by a 4 year old. Or are you saying she's too weak to lift 6-7 pounds?
@alainaiswriting Жыл бұрын
I just assumed it was part of the series convention that necromancers as a whole are super weak due to all the thanergy they're working with (there's a bit where the 2nd House necro mentions that she could run a kilometer in 10 minutes, and that this was the best score in her military training group lol, vs her cavalier who could run it in 5 minutes; necromantic toddlers are described as lacking typical baby fat, and most of the necromancers are described as frail/bony/etc within the narrative and also in-in-universe romance novels and things. and cavaliers specifically train with rapiers so that lyctors can wield more easily). That said, I went into the series not knowing very much about swords at all, so it's cool to realize there are all sorts of nuances between types of different swords that I had no idea existed! Ty for the fun fact :)

I don’t have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, but most of my joints (and I do mean most, even finger joints and rib joints) are VERY hypermobile. Hyper mobility essentially means that a joint has way more mobility than what is normal or really healthy. This can manifest as “natural flexibility” like easy splits and double jointedness, but not necessary as tight muscle tissue can restrict the joint and the mismatched mobility of the joint and its surrounding muscles is a recipe for muscle injuries. Hyper mobility also just makes it SO much harder to build strength. For example, I can dislocate my shoulders at will, but even though I have been working on my arm strength every day for YEARS I can barely manage 10 push-ups on my knees. And at age 13 I had to start seeing a chiropractor once a week to have various joints reassembled. One of my more frequent slipped joints is one where my rib connects to my sternum and apparently it’s an injury rarely seen outside of quarterbacks or hockey players. I’m a yoga instructor. Anyway, it was really cool to read from the perspective of a protagonist that struggles similarly to me. I never thought I’d see it, let alone in a fantasy setting I would like. Also, i can confirm that if Violet has difficulty building strength like I do, a sword would be too heavy. A sword is too heavy for me to wield longer than a few minutes.

8:18 Truly the best part of this video is this followed by a rant about swords, lol

So generally yes, swords are not too heavy for women to handle. But Vi has a clearly established reason for why a sword would be too heavy for her specifically. Chronic illnesses that affect your joints are ABSOLUTELY going to change the rules there, and I don't think assuming the author is perpetuating a stereotype when it's clearly established and logical that a single, specific character wouldn't be able to handle a sword is effective critique. I have RA and I couldn't handle even a super light sword either, and I kind of love that Vi is representing chronic illness and disability in this book and what kinds of workarounds and accommodations would make surviving in this kind of story viable.

Yes, he just hadn't gotten to the bit where she says she's sick when he went on that rant

I recognize that context clues probably get lost in a tipsy read, but the book hints from page 3 ("too frail" generally doesn't just suggest physical smallness or weakness, frailty when not used in the context of an older person tends to denote illness or an underlying factor. Additionally, Mama Sorrengail explicitly says "it's like that fever stole all your coloring along with your strength" which suggests that Vi's health was at least damanged if she doesn't have something ongoing) that Vi has reasons other than being a woman for swords being too heavy. The hints start on page three and it's not till page 6 that Mira asks Vi if she can handle a sword and Vi responds that it's too heavy. So technically the reader is given the explanation prior to Vi saying swords are too heavy. I would drop images of the pages with the quotes highlighted here too, but I'm not actually sure if KZbin allows that, so I apologize for not more clearly citing my quotes. @@wolfishpotato6978

@@gracemccarthy9739 if we take every mention of a female MC being weak or frail as an indication of a genetic connective tissue disorder, then we’ll have to assume that to be true for at least half of them in this genre. That just isn’t true. It’s also a bad precedent to set. There’s a reason hints don’t work for this topic and a reason the author makes her disorder explicitly known if not named.

@@pithygrapefruit The mention of the fever ruining Violet's health on page 3 is pretty explicit. I also was not speaking of the genre broadly. Violet's EDS is quite unusual for an MC in this genre, so my comments are specific to Fourth Wing. You absolutely cannot generalize about chronically ill protagonists because they are the minority

I'm not personally interested in this book (I just liked the tipsy guessing concept) but I've heard a bunch of people complain it's hard to find and I definitely flinched when I saw it torn.

It's a very popular book, copies abound. The only way it's hard to find is at a library because it's constantly checked out.

It was hard to find up until a month or 2 ago, it was sold out while the publisher worked on getting more printings out. They’ve now restocked and it’s everywhere again, without the coveted stenciled edges unique to the first printing (those are reselling for $200+)

In my opinion Fourth Wing is in the same categories as Twilight, anything that Mass has ever written: "great unintentional comedies", "mom's first fantasy book" and "characters are too horny to function"
