Greatest Little Britons - Brassed Off
Documentary following four Yorkshire bands (Dinnington, Horbury Victoria (MD Duncan Beckley), City of Bradford (MD Lee Skipsey) and Grimethorpe) competing at different levels as they attempted to qualify for the 2012 National Finals in Cheltenham and London.

I agree with Shaun Crowther. I used to hate contesting. All the rehearsing, the sectional rehearsals of a set piece that you just didn't enjoy playing at all, then on the day of the contest, all the waiting around. I much preferred concerts even though we won many contests including being crowned National Champions in our section. I don't play now, but I do miss being an active part of banding.

Brass Banding is definitely a British thing, although it has spread throughout the world over the past 200 years. All throughout the Commonwealth, This video shows some of the passion. Banding is tribal. Competition underpins the whole movement. The growth of the Railway Networks in the 19th Century enabled Bands to compete against each other. The biggest and most famous name in Brass Banding is Besses o' th' Barn Band.

I'm Super competitive and the Yorkshire Area Contest is my favourite, i'd go as far as saying I prefer contesting to concerts, i might be slightly contravertial here, I prefer it at Bradford to Huddersfield

38:33 That was the performance! We peaked at the right time. 😂 didn’t peak enough though. 41:25 we were the outright winners. No you wasn’t. The best band on the day won. It was a tough piece juts like the devil was in the championship section
