Very infliencial video I really believe I understand what you expect for your animals. How does a guy like me with a good genetic 2 yr old English Lab with good drive and sort of obedient but many behavioral issues (not always listens) get to this level of compliance? Not just hunt compliciabce, I’d be happy with any highly focused work compliance. Thank you John

Very nice training vid and great dogs! I got one question: How do you correct you're dog and set up the first exersice differently when you're dog isn't listening and goes for the water retrieve instead of the land where you wanted him to go? How do you prevent him from constantly selfrewarding himself when not taking the correct line or ignoring whistle commands by getting a water retrieve?

Simple, just call him in if he goes for the wrong retrieve, and resend on the correct one, also you could whistle sit and cast him to the right one.

May I please ask how I can get my dog to retrieve out of cold water? He has no issues in warm weather but now that it’s cold, he wants nothing to do with cold water and always hesitates unless it’s close to shore

Where can I buy a pre trained dog? I work, I don't have time to teach a pup

Again a really good commonsense helpful production, thank you. Just one question. Do you teach your dogs to sometimes be a bit more tentative with their water entry? I am referring to where there could be underwater hazards such as broken trees etc. I had my first Labrador stab himself deep in his chest when shooting in flooded Red gums. My new Labrador is extremely fast on water entry and I have a mind to restrain him somewhat even though all my hunting these days is on the Lower Murray lakes. Cheerio Bob, South Australia.

My puppy wants to run down the bank until she gets even with the dummy in the water then go into the water, is that a good thing?
@drakecollins98816 жыл бұрын
Royce Blackmon yes if the dog is going duck hunt only. The dog is using his sense to get to the bird and back to the blind the fastest way. If he’s a field trial/hunt test dog then no. Field trial/hunt test judges want the dog to take a straight line to the down bird. This is one of the unfortunate areas where hunt tests and real duck hunting don’t match. Problem is most hunt test/field trial people don’t hunt and they have became a sport in onto theirselves.

It can sometimes be an issue. I have found my dog runs the bank then can easily loose track of where the bird is if it is not belly up. While it can be easier to let the dog run the bank in my experience the dog does better if lined properly then enters the water.

@@charlesgilliland532 Correct, if you can see the mark, then it probably doesn't matter; from an efficiency aspect. But if it's in cover or the dog has to go through much cover to get to the bird, then a direct line is usually best and most successful.

I want my dog to go in a line to the bird and straight back. If it's in the river I still want them to go straight in the river but of course they come back up the bank. If your trying to get them to go straight in. get right on edge of the water and throw the bumper close to u. then over time u can move back and get the bumper further out into the water.

@@migratorygame7400 You teach them to Take More Water. If they see it, they should get in it. That is the mindset. A dog that goes strait out and back, will usually come back with the bird without needing to be handled. That allows you to concentrate on the next shot and another dog. ;-)
