This fox pest control shooting video is on a small 100 acre block I've just gained access to. Out with the Lithgow LA101 17HMR and PARD NV008 LRF I tottled to sort the poultry killer out (Or killers). The digital scope can work quite well in locations like this with clear target ID and limited obstructions to flare out the IR light. The 17HMR is perfect for this type of fox shooting as there is little chance of ricochets and the little 20grain pills make a mess once inside a fox. The trajectory is handy too as often animals will be walked up to around the 100 to 125 meter mark. No hold over required at that range which makes for accurate and ethical fox shooting.
The owner of this block is very happy as he figured there was "a" fox which had killed all his chickens. Nope there's foxes everywhere out there, more than one of the buggers. He is already chatting with more neighbor's to get me on their blocks too. Win win that one, great example of doing the right thing and getting a few points on the board.

@davidcat1455
@davidcat1455 3 жыл бұрын
@@craigphillips9810 I don’t know if this applies to the Ruger but my Savage .17 HMR is very ammunition sensitive. Hornady ammunition works great and holds a tight group but Winchester and ICL don’t. Not sure why, but the guy at the gunshop warned me about it and when I asked him for a specific ammunition recommendation he said “you’ll just have to test it and try”. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with the other ammo it just seems to be one of the quirks of the savage. I’m very happy with the rifle, if I don’t shoot a tight group it’s operator error. 😀👍

@@MyChannel-b5f I didn’t know that about the ammo coming out of the same factory. I’m not exactly what you would call a crackshot😀. My folks have been losing chickens to bobcats. They've got trail cam video of the cats in the chicken coop in broad daylight. Sneaky sneaky little buggers. You ever have trouble with the hmr not performing well? A good friend and excellent marksman shot a couple coyotes in the head around 70 yards and it just gave them a headache. .223 and 40 vmax came back out after that. I'm pretty wary about using it on much more than squirrels and crows at relatively short range, I just don't have much confidence in the high speed pellet gun.
@MyChannel-b5f
@MyChannel-b5f 3 жыл бұрын
Mate the 17HMR, I've seen deer shot with it. It is NOT a pellet gun. You just need to put the pill in the right place. If your friend lost a few coyotes that's shot placement. There's a lot of not fatal areas to hit in a head.
@randomidiot8142
@randomidiot8142 3 жыл бұрын
@@MyChannel-b5f Honestly I don't doubt that people have shot deer with it, anymore than I don't doubt people shoot deer with .22 handguns or actual small caliber pellet guns. It's not literally a pellet gun, but it's not a .22 hornet or .223 either. I've shot mine a decent bit and for me it's only a 100 yard rat/squirrel/crow shooter, the same as my .22 lr and .25 air rifle. It shoots a small projectile dependent on velocity for expansion and fragmentation but it doesn't start out fast or retain velocity well, although this can be a good thing. I've seen the crazy 300 yard hmr vs rabbit/crow videos, but I just don't trust it like some do. If the game is bigger or the range longer, the .223 comes out. The guy that I heard about the .17 hmr failure from is a trusted family friend and an excellent shooter. I've shot his rifle, I've seen him shoot, and others have seen him do stupid things like shoot 4 coyotes on the run with a bolt action after missing the first shot. When I grab a gun to kill a coyote, I'm reaching past the .17 I don't completely trust for a better option I trust more. 🤷‍♂️ Just how I feel about it.
@MyChannel-b5f
@MyChannel-b5f 3 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, I use mine where the property doesn't allow safe use of a centrefire, It's a better safer option than the 22LR which is prone to ricochets. We'll have to agree to disagree on what it's capable of. For me it's a 150m fox gun if you place the pill in the right spot, 200m rabbit gun in low wind. Coyotes are a bit bigger than a fox and I agree, the HMR wouldn't be my choice.

We all live off grid in Central Vic and a mate of mine has a fenced orchard that he spent thouasand on to fox proof so his chooks can roam safe. It is also high to keep the roos out and all the fruit trees are netted. The hen house is straw bale on a concrete slab and concrete mesh is the chook yard. Between the hen house and the orchard is a full circle chicken wire tunnel race about 30m long. He goes away and a branch falls on the tunnel, crushing it leaving the hens stranded in the orchard. What do you reckon happened? Foxes gnawed through the chicken wire and nabbed every last one - many of them were just killed and left. It is possible feral cats got in on the act I suppose. Funny thing is foxes couldn't work out they could gnaw the tunnel wire and go direct to the hen house but they could work out how to do it with the chooks in the orchard. Years that system worked. One branch is all it took.
