"In a segment on whether access to a pair of sneakers costing $300 was a "civil rights issue," Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy and his guest delved into the cultural problems that the black community faces. They asked if this particular sneaker and the outrage over it's price is indicative of a larger problem among African American civil rights leaders who, according to the panel guest, blame shift in order to avoid confronting harsh truths...".* Ana Kasparian, Cenk Uygur, and Jayar Jackson discuss on The Young Turks.

For the record. I grew up in an overwhelmingly white neighborhood as a black kid. When Nike Jordans cam out in the late 80's all the richest kids bought them and then ridiculed all the other kids without them. I never got any expensive shoes. My mom did buy me a pair of Bo Jacksons when they were on sale but that was about it. I should also not that Bling Bling hip-hop did not exist until white suburbanites started listening in the mid to late 90's. They are the reason hip-hop turned into a place for wealth fetishes. Bofore then hip-hop involved a lot of problack msgs. I miss that kind of music. It was soulful and empowering.

I am strongly for the LEGALIZATION OF ALL DRUGS. In the inner city, people are consuming taxpayer money, NOT contributing, overwhelmingly abandoning their children, who do terribly in school, most of the time NOT graduating from high school. They are constantly asking for another government 'program' (more taxpayer money) to help them, while they refuse to help themselves, waste money, that is TAXPAYER MONEY, on status symbol sneakers and drugs, NOT EDUCATION.

In America it's always black or white... when in reality the grey area is almost always the truth. Do corporations have a responsibility to try to sell things that are good for people? Yes! Corporations should not take advantage of people's ignorance. Do people have a responsibility to research products, and make informed rational decisions? Yes! People should be wise with their purchases so that corporations have a demand for good product. Both TYT and Fox are just 2 sides of the same coin.

It's just political correctness gone mad. So what if $315 sneakers are marketed at young black people. They don't have to buy them do they? Next you'll be saying that corporations shouldn't be able to advertise cigarettes to the youth. If they want to smoke it's their problem. I hope I never see the day when alcohol has to be concealed in public as it may incentivise young people to take up drinking. If people are stupid enough to drink too much for too long that's their problem. ...gambling etc.

the truth Even if they are closet racists that doesn't mean they are wrong in this particular case. I don't like Fox all that much either, but honestly you don't have to buy $300 shoes if you don't want too, no one is forcing you, I honestly don't think blaming the corporation is right in this situation. Cenk was saying how they always protect corporations which is funny cause Liberals always want to Blame corporations. People probably are buying the $300 shoes, which means it's working, if it wasn't working they wouldn't sell any shoes and would probably lose money, and be forced to mark the price down.

When Gay people were fighting for the ability to marry, not all gay people wanted that, like Milo Yiannopoulous. Even still it was a gay issue correct? Just because I said its a Black issue doesn't mean I am talking about every single black person in the United States of America. If it doesn't apply to you move on. Unfortunately, in modern black culture we have a problem where we place value. As I said in my earlier post. I have kids I work with that barely have food to eat BUT THEY HAVE JORDANS. If you do not see a problem with that picture than we no longer have anything to discuss.

Shelia A Sure. See how many white people will condemn someone white who does something. Many in the black community still will no discuss the thug culture and victim mentality. What happened to trayvon martin was wrong and Zimmerman was guilty of at least manslaughter in my opinion, but making out a thug like him into some civil rights hero is a disgrace to people like Dr. King. There is a double standard of how people are judged in this country sadly.

Monika Johnson We take plenty, Slavery always gets brought up. Even people living in the projects in America are better off than most Africans. Also with affirmative action were white liberals taking accountability. There is no obsession. I just find it funny that with a majority of blacks anytime someone black does something wrong it is made a race issue. Sadly too many blacks let liberal whites keep them on uncle sams plantation. This is not done to benefit the black man, but to control their votes. The white people blacks often think are their friends are the real racist. Look at when rep Clyburn wanted to run against rep hoyer for minority whip. Nancy Pelosi basically patted him on the head and I am sure said "Now, now, now. You just keep your people voting for us and we will protect you and yoru benefits from those evil white people". And some on the right do the same dang think making all blacks out to be criminals to keep white people voting for them and the average joe is a moron and fights amongst ourselves than fix the country. You look at anyone who tried to unite white and black people, Lincoln was assassinated, JKF was assassinated, DR, King was assassinated and I think with the help of the us government. BObby Kennedy was assassinated. Malcolm X did not get any attention as long as he was a separatist. He talks about brotherhood between the races and he got hit.

I wont defend it and it was wrong, but I think most blacks forget the standard fo living the poorest blacks have in this nation compared to African nations. You also can only live in the past so long. Those were lover before I was born. I dotn think any reasonable person would think someone should be responsible for what their great, great grandparents may have done. There does not have to be a white history month. The thing is there is a new double standard of how people are judged. Has that really solved anything? I don't think so.

As a black person, I have to disagree with TYT here. If demand were not high enough to warrant a $300 price tag, then the company producing the shows would lower it to maintain product sales while lowering their profit margin. If you could sell your car right now to someone for 5 times its value, wouldn't you do it? Of course you would. Bottom line is this: live within your means. If your bills are "x" and your salary is "y", don't spend money on things you don't need, which ultimately closes the gap between "x" and "y".

I think the only people that were "trashed" were the individuals on a limited income that went out and bought $300 dollar shoes. Every product has a target audience, these shoes were marketed towards selling in the African American community. The same community that has issues with income, education, and unemployment.

I DO agree that Fox is completely racist. I think the story was a pretty obvious hit job against blacks on multiple issues. That being said does your kid really need $315 sneakers? Don't buy them! It's called supply and demand. They would price it that way if they knew people wouldn't pay it. The shoe issue is people's (if mostly black so be it) fault. Now saying schools, crime and that is their fault is complete bs. Also I wonder what they paid that sob to sell out his race?

Um.. okay, I watched this clip with an open mind and everything Fox said was correct and everything Cenk and his associates said was just, wrong. Who gives a damn about how expensive a pair of sneakers are, first of all. They can just buy cheaper sneakers. How is this a racial issue at all? If the black "civil rights leaders" hadn't brought it up, Fox would have had nothing to say about black people and sneakers.

TV ads are more powerful than we sometimes realize. Millions of people are watching the same ad. They show a false picture of our "neighborhoods" and who's got what or what you should have to fit in. To this day I want a BMW but I can barely afford my Hyundai.

I think 48% is the majority here. The black community don't make up 52% There is the Asian community, Latino community, Native community, There's no way they only make up the 4% needed for the black community to even reach 48%, How about looking at it another way. The POOR community is on food stamps. It doesn't matter if you're a homeless black person or a homeless white person. If they all stuck together, maybe they could push for change. But instead, well....Divided and Conqured.

Sorry, I'm a black female and kind of agree. I am not supporting Fox on the issues of crime and poverty... But as far as blame for expensive shoes: Corporations want to make money, you can't blame them for advertising expensive crap. They do it to everybody. It's up to people to be strong willed and teach their kids that clothes are not important. Maybe if they were focusing less on shoes they'd be getting better test scores. I know it's harsh but it's true....

It's called capitalism. A firm can charge whatever they want for their product, if the demand is still reasonable at a price of $300, why not charge it? It isn't the corporation's fault. How can you justify being angry at somebody for charging outlandish amounts for an ELASTIC good? Nobody REQUIRES those Jordans.

75% of the expensive shoes wore when I grew up were that of balcks. While 25% were white, all 100% of them are stupid for paying that much for a product that (if wore every day) might last 6 months to a year max. If the people are going to buy them, you can't blame Nike, Adidas, or any of the other companies. It's kind of like phones, phones rarely last more than a year and if you somehow get by on that 2 year contract with the same phone, it's in horrible condition becasue of use.

As much as I hate FOX news and "Tomin azz black people"...I agree that the comment about 300 dollar sneakers should be directed toward the black community and not to the Nike corporation. To think that any shoe company that CAN sell $300.00 shoes will stop doing so because it is putting certain people in a worse possition than they are in, is unrealistic.

If you genuinely want to fix these problems you have to start by addressing them. Cenk doesn't have a veritable interest in the black community in this respect. Here he's just defaming Fox news to agitate black and liberal viewers. This is in fact exactly what Fox news does to appeal to poor white viewers - as long as those viewers are racist, ignorant, and prone to violence. I'd love see at least one TYT clip where they have the balls to address the real problems with black people in America.

This has been going on at least since I was in grade school back in 1965. Hyped Nikes every kid wanted them and there was a lot of crying (literally) about it. At that age we feel a lot of pressure to fit in with the current styles the cool kids are wearing. I owned two pairs of bell bottom pants and I felt like I was on cloud nine when I wore them to school. But my parents never fell in for those outrageously price items. If you're middle class or lower what are u doing with designer clothes?

I did some research on the $300 nike's this is what I found, the shoes are Called Nike Hyperdunk they come in several versions, basic for $140, the sport pack for $250 and $290 customizable. The $250-$290 version comes with scenors in the shoe to plug into your Iphone that acts as a personal trainer. Recording your performance and helping your game. This version is for serious players not your average person. Not many black's or any others will purchase these shoes just because.

I am a social democrat, and in favor of a Norway-type welfare state, but honestly, people in welfare shouldn't be buying those shoes.
