When the "Defund the Police" movement was going on, Portland joined that. The PD needed a budget increase (the need is demonstrated in this video), but they got a 1% budget cut. It's not huge, but it's the wrong direction for their circumstances. The officers got and continue to get the clear message from the public -- they're not appreciated.

I'm an immigrant and I find it crazy that shoplifters here, even caught red-handed, are not stopped by store employees. Cuz in my old country, if you get caught you'll be beaten up first before you're handed to the police. Darrel is a good guy and a straight shooter. I work down the street from him a couple blocks away. I used to live in the neighborhood. When my car was stolen out out of my driveway the cops couldn't care less. When it was "recovered" 10 blocks away it was because it was parked illegally, towed without informing me, and then I had to pay a $400 tow bill like I was the criminal. I've lived in Portland 50 years and it just keeps getting worse. I am heartbroken that this once sleepy bohemian counter-culture kooky city has descended into chaos and anarchy. I see it differently. Walmart is a magnet for homeless people--with their policy of letting people stay overnight on their property and beg during the day. There's a walmart down the street from my house and since it opened there are more homeless and the neighborhood has gone down. More theft of yard property, pilfering in cars, mail theft. Blue shopping carts in the alleys. Walmart doesn't invest in anti-theft strategies, like adequate security and enough floor staff to deter. It's all stockers and checkout. All so we can buy some cheap trinket for 1.19 instead of 2.79 somewhere else. Crime will fall when walmart leaves

when i was in architecture school, the professors always talked about how we need to do more to help the "underserved communities". 2.2 million in losses in one yr for my Walmart in Anaheim. They actually had video of a guy stealing. He left with his goods. Then while he was gone they removed some stuff from the section he was stealing from. He came back in a few hrs later and actually had the nerve to ask the associate where the stuff was. They knew it was him. Had a clear pic of him which I have too. And still do nothing. Fantastic work

I lived in Portland from 1991-2016. When I left in 2016, it felt like a divorce. I once loved living there, and by the time I left, I despised it. I do still travel there, as I love my dentist. I drive from the southern Oregon coast twice a years to get my teeth cleaned. It amazes me how much worse Portland is, even from 2016. It startles me to see all of the homeless people, the businesses gone, the dead downtown. I hope that it can recover from the demise it seems to becoming. Walmart pulling out...wake up, Portland!

The biggest obstacle to stopping crime in Portland (and all of Oregon) is how watered down penalties for crimes like theft have become. For instance, bicycle theft in Portland is rampant, but if you call Portland Police they refuse to respond and tell you to mail it in. If a Portland business has items shoplifted, and the amount is below $900 Portland Police refuse to respond and again the business is instructed to mail it in. The watering down of penalties in Oregon has reached the point of ridiculousness. Several years ago I had someone break into a vehicle on my property and try to steal it. You would think the person who did this would be charged with attempted grand theft auto---not in Oregon. In a case where a vehicle has not been stolen successfully the charge is "illegal entry of a vehicle" as if a homeless person snuck into a vehicle to take a nap, and the penalty is a paltry slap on the wrist for a misdemeanor. It is this exact type of scenario which is wrecking cities like Portland. If criminals know that they will not be prosecuted then crime just gets worse and worse. I think businesses in Portland should band together and file class action lawsuits against the city of Portland for malfeasance in regard to not apprehending and appropriately prosecuting thieves and burglars. The Lents neighborhood certainly comes to mind in this regard.

Sounds like Portland is ripe for vigilante committees to form. If the law doesn't punish criminals, then it's probably time for citizens to take the law into their own hands. If anyone dares to charge the vigilantes with anything they should simply say, "Charge me like you would charge antifa."

Portland used to be such a great city .. I lived there years ago and last year went back for a visit. couldn't believe what it has become... so sad. The only thing I can say is you voted for this leadership and when the stores have left the crime will come straight to your house..... there is a lot to be said for "go woke go broke"

Regardless of who you are , State, Countys, etc there is a saying, Bad Apples ,Ruin It For Everyone". The people that it hurts the most are the public that act responsible, do their part to support the Business and Communities. Its not hard to see who what where the bad apples make their presence know. There may come a day with any business to shop you have to be and meet standards to get foot in the door

To be fair, a lot of these people (in Portland) don't believe in conservative ideology. They might not like the democrats being soft on crime, but they also are against most things that conservative republicans stand for. So they're between a rock and a hard place.

The first time I visited Portland 25 years ago, I found it so beautiful and progressive. The people seemed intelligent and open-minded. They had the best open markets downtown. Amazing food stalls downtown. Powells bookstore/ the Max, theaters, just culturally amazing! When I see what is happening there now, one saying comes to mind. “Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.” I really hope Portland will be reborn to what it was before. I wish the same for our country.
