As a Lee county resident… if they say evacuate, EVACUATE. I will never get over being in my house and seeing that storm surge coming higher and higher, over taking the mailboxes, a 6.5 foot fence.. and kelt climbing. You don’t even think about yourself at that point. At that point you start thinking about your family, that’s all you can think about is them. And you start to think “Will they find our bodies all together or far apart?”. The only light we had for hours was the neighbors cars shorting out making the headlights go on and flash and car alarms to go off.. that is until the water swallowed them up. Occasionally you’d just see a weird flowing spot under the water as the lights would turn on for a few seconds before they died entirely. Ian changed me and my opinions on hurricanes. I slept for two weeks under the bare night sky. All night I had helicopters flying overhead, with baskets flying to save people. Occasionally, once I got used to the sound of the helicopters, the smell of death would wake me. Our street was covered in MASSIVE cat fish and mullet and mangrove snappers. I mean those catfish were MASSIVE. Dead, in the roads and lots. Had lived through probably dozens of hurricanes/tropical storms. I became ignorant to how bad it could be. Ian was…if they say leave, LEAVE! it’s not worth it…

Experience is the best teacher; extra food/water(for animals too), candles etc should always be on hand whether a storm is coming or not. Remember though that projected paths and impact ‘cones’ change constantly and major storm systems fall apart as often as not. Act wisely as far as preparedness (to the extent you are able) and you won’t get caught up in the weather channel fear mongering.

Yes, absolutely the best, clear, concise forcast, especially for our area. Im in Sarasota. Just got through the last one...flood, trapped in my car with water rising. Smart cars are a death trap. Couldnt ooen the doors, horn didnt work, lights didnt work, died, wouldnt restart. Water was fillingup to my neck. I put my chihuahuas on the dashboard. It had to have been God listening, because the axe didnt break my windows or open the doors. I prayed and said, "It's in your hands God, but I dont want my Chihuahuas to die...theyre my family.". Then imlaiid back in the water and started kicking the door...it still didnt open. I kept praying..made up my mind to die. Once flash flood water enters a car, it doesnt leak out because the high waters outside keep it trapped inside...it gets even higher. As i kicked and prayed and said to God, its your will, the door very slowly opened. Now i dispise Florida. Im leaving.

Climate change and rising sea levels will make properties in low lying areas and coastal areas impossible to insure. Banks will be reluctant to give a mortgage for 15 or 30 years because the property may be under water. Selling properties to average buyers will become impossible in the future as banks and mortgage companies stop making loans for these properties. Coastal areas are a high risk for insurance and extreme weather like hurricanes. People will have to self insure and take the risk of loss. Condo associations are losing their insurance and if they find a new higher cost policy they will be passing on the higher costs to association members. Flooded cars from hurricanes fill the salvage lots. Insurance companies will raise rates and pass on the costs and risks to policy holders next year. Coastal properties will be confined to wealthy individuals that can buy properties with cash and self insure for losses from hurricanes or rising sea levels.
