The platforms take significant amounts of money, it makes sense that drivers would try to offer private rides where they keep 100% of the fare. Personally I'd never take them up on the offer because as a passenger you're not covered by Lyft/Uber insurance guarantee. It's also foolish for the drivers too because if they DO get in a car accident that passenger isn't going to lie to the drivers private insurance on their behalf.
