FOX! It is NOT CALLED A VISA. It is a travel pre-authorization that you can apply for online called ETIAS. (European travel information and authorization system). Much like the Europeans under the Visa Waiver Program of the United States, they are required get an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) - country’s equivalent of the ETIAS in Europe. For which they can apply for online for a small fee. A visa is a formal permit in a form of a foil granted by the consul or embassy of the country you’re visiting and officially physically embedded on a page of a passport. What Americans need here is a pre-authorization. and you can get this quickly at home from your computer for a small fee. STOP calling it a VISA. It is a misinformation! Ask a consulate officer or an ambassador if you don’t believe me.

PLUS: Have you Americans ever been treated by your own security people (with no formal education or knowledge of foreign customs & habits) like a criminal like visitors from abroad? Not true for most E.U. countries, the United States has a Visa waiver program which lists all the countries where a visa will be waived if the person is traveling to the United States for 90 days or less. This program was established in 1986, and Italy is one of the countries on the list. Also even then you could still get the visa requirements waived but you would have to go through the US customs and border protection to determine eligibility to travel without a Visa if you are from a country not on the list or if it was before 1986. Now in the U.S. there is an electronic system called ESTA, but this is not for a Visa or Visa requirements to travel to the United States if your country is on the approved list, this is just an approval process which is very different from actually trying to acquire a Visa, which a Traveller would have to do if they were trying to stay more than 90 days or if their country was not on our approved waiver program.

@@lovelynight5967 The new European system (ETIAS) is also not a visa. It's very much a pre-travel authorization in the same way that ESTA is. If you want to say that it's a stupid game with calling it "not a visa" when it's "really a a visa", that's exactly what many of the countries that have Visa-Waiver Programs with the US have been saying for years since implementing ESTA in ~2009. The US wants to have their cake (require a "visa" that's not really a visa for entry) and eat it too (citizens can travel to VWP countries with no visa or ETA). Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I'm not thrilled that I'll have to do it in the future when going to the EU, but I can hardly blame them and surprised it's taken so long.

Once again if you live in a country that is on the approved list you can travel to United States without a Visa for up to 90 days or less, but still have to fill out the ESTA. The process to get a Visa can be very time-consuming and lengthy, so I don't know if the people reporting the story meant that the EU is now going to have their own form of an ESTA system or if this supposed speedy process will actually give people visas. To me this is all about money charging $8 per person, considering the thousands of people that travel to Europe on a daily basis.
