The backstory to this is that the carrier had a hold on the man’s mail because of the dog. The man was constantly harassing the mailman for not delivering his mail because of that. The customer went to the office to complain about the carrier. The carrier explained the situation the management. The carrier agreed to deliver his mail if the dog wasn’t out. When approaching the house the customer came out and right away questioned him “where’s my mai” while recording him. That raised a red flag for the carrier so the carrier turned away for his safety. Long story short this man now picks up his mail at the office.

You know what's crazy? You can easily get all of your mail if you just don't come out or have your dog out... There's a reason mail carriers don't deliver around dogs, some instances cats are major dicks so I get it but dogs? I don't try to risk it also if you park in front of your mailbox you ain't getting mail... Shits not hard 💀

@@randallsheriff3529 some people actually go outside and enjoy their yard or porch. Doesn't mean all people outside want to socialize with the mailman. Most that do are elderly people that don't get much company, they look forward to that. This situation I'm only seeing part of, if their is more. But a mail carrier can walk passed an individual and put mail in a box without engaging. So for example summer is coming, people have kids outside playing in the yard or pool and what? People are supposed to stay locked in there house from 9-3? I don't think so. Common respect goes both ways. Did I say people should have to deal with animals running all over? No.

@@maryrapisardi8567 of course but if you have a dog dont come outside especially if they can't see the door you can wait 10 seconds or if you've had a problem with an animal or you been a problem before just don't also 9-3 💀 majority of the time your mail arrives around the same time every time so... That was pointless of course respect goes both ways but like I said if you've been a problem expect no mail when coming outside

I delivered a package a few weeks ago and right after I scanned the barcode a dog came running out of the front door after me. Their screen door was not latched. I will not deliver there anymore.

See I would justify this but I've encountered a different situation. I got a support puppy last spring and even on days I have no mail, without asking my mail carrier runs across the street to my yard feeding and petting my puppy without even asking. My yard is not even close to my mailbox. When I said no, because I was training my puppy. He would sneak and feed it when my daughter was outside with the puppy. I'm thankful for security cameras for all parties.

@@vikkileigh422 I can only speak for my own situation my mail carrier won't stop feeding all of the dogs in the neighborhood. He doesn't ask. It's literally common sense to ask before feeding and or approaching someone's animals. Yet my mail carrier decided to be aggressive and scream at me in front of my kids when my dog wasn't even outside because I called him on this. I'm glad my neighbors had the footage on camera but he's still going up to neighbors animals without asking and feeding and stroking their dogs. That's not part of his job and no one should have to tell a grown man to stop going up to dogs or in people's yards or reaching through fences feeding customers dogs without permission.

As a mailman myself, I gotta say, it's true. We are told not to take any chances with dogs. People, keep your dogs inside, or don't get your mail, your choice

As the significant other of a mail carrier who has been attacked by various dogs. I appreciate the common sense responses! People literally have been disabled from dogs and their negligent owners not caring for the safety of professionals delivering to their home. This guy is lucky they haven't forced him to open up a p.o. box. The carrier was OBVIOUSLY going to deliver until the man opened the door. Just let the man do his job once he leaves you can get the mail. The problem is peoples entitlement and disregard for others.

Mailman was clearly approaching with intent to deliver.. why would he bother walking so close if he weren’t going to? Mail carriers face the risk of out of control pets all day, every day. If he gets bitten or attacked some time, the lost work and medical bills could totally destabilize his security in life.

As a mailcarrier, we also have the right not to interact with difficult customers. We are timed on our delivery routes and we are given the authority to protect ourselves. We are often many yards to blocks away from our vehicles and we choose to Not Engage with difficult patrons. They can pick their mail up at the Post Office. Mail delivery is a privilege not a right in the United States.

my dogs ARE always inside, he used to use my front door for 2 years with my dog inside, he got mad when I made him start using my back mailbox because of his LOITERING, he was also recording on private property, both AGAINST your postal regulations. don't protect bad mail carriers.

Don’t open your door when he’s on approach.. what’s the big deal? They are trained NOT to go near an open door or even a flimsy screen window.. it’s not about your rights. It’s about their safety. They can issue you a PO Box and do away entirely with the residential service altogether. Just secure your animals and close your doors. Stop being a Karen

People dont understand that they are rules if mail carriers get bite by a dog they could loose their job period. There is no way that we going to put ourselfes at risk for customers that dont respect rules.

It’s not on customers to respect workplace rules when they are not part of the workplace. Further, carriers cannot be fired if they are bitten. It’s a workman’s comp issue. If they do lose their job, that’s a huge lawsuit.

@@zacharydavis7184 actually, we can be fired if we get bitten because it's considered preventable and our fault if we deliver in the presence of an animal and shouldn't. Granted, a carrier who gets fired because of this could fight it through the union, but it depends on the situation, and there is a chance the carrier can get fired.

Shoo... as a rural carrier I was required by my job to put any package I could (not registered needing a signature mail or packages that didn't fit the box) in the mail box. No matter what special instructions someone puts on the package or whatever. And if there was a dog or even a harassing customer, nope. Pick it up at the post office. If you went into any other work place with a dangerous animal, or acting crazy, do you think you'd get food/service/whatever?

I'm a mail carrier. We actually are told not to deliver in the presence of an animal as a general rule. I'm a rural carrier so it's a little different, but if I go to a house and there is a dog I don't know I will honk and see if the customer will come out to get their package, if not, I scan it "animal interference" and try again the next day. If I know the dogs, I get out and deliver, but that's actually risky to be honest, any dog can bite. Mail carriers on walking routes are at even more of a risk. I have seen some gnarly dog bites, and carriers have even been killed. So I understand why the carrier is doing this, even if it may seem extreme. He would rather be safe than sorry.

A dog will often interpret a carrier's hand reaching toward the customer as a threat and then lunge at the carrier. Carriers are not required to endanger themselves if there is a hazard. Customers opening their door upon hearing the carrier do not realize carriers are often attacked by pets who run out unexpectedly at those moments. It may be difficult for a lot of people to understand, but in this case, the carrier is actually right in what he is doing.

I am the owner of the business the guys name is Ed Haller he’s been our mailman for years. The issue begin when he came in the door one day and commented about the dog. Even though for the last several years have been coming in with no issue. To resolve the issue that he was claiming I ask him to deliver to the backyard where the mailboxes are attached instead of walking in the front door of my business and loitering in bothering us anyway. The guy like to come in and tell us about everybody else’s business in the neighborhood which I didn’t want to hear.. So, he was upset that I made him start delivering to the back that he complained to a supervisor that he was afraid of the dog in the backyard might be outside. He now delivers out front from his truck and I walk out the door to get my mail. So I guess we both got what we wanted let’s contact in my mail every day without any bullshit from letter carrier that’s A-hole of the neighborhood. He’s had a lot of complaints. Luckily he’s retiring soon. All the other mail carriers love us. Never an issue with any other ones

I was NEVER contacted by the post office for ANYTHING.. didn't you listen to the reporter? he explained what had happened in the past, you're stupid I sent the mailman to the back to AVOID any issue he could have with my dog with was NONE. he used to come inside the front door knowing all well of the dog, the only reason he complained was because he now has to walk around my shop to deliver. he's an angry little man.

Would a delivery driver be in the right for refusing to drop off your food if there’s a remote threat? Hell no. This is a federal employee. Refusing to deliver the mail extensively is a federal crime. Don’t like it? Don’t do the job.

@@meathead7254 I love dogs. It appears that this mail carrier is trying to keep his job and stay safe. Something to consider here, If he is injured he could be fired, the dog owner could get sued and the dog could be euthanized. If a mail carrier is injured on the job they are written up, if they are forced to be on light duty until they heal even when temporary they get treated terribly, if it is permanent and you are unable to do your job you are forced out. I saw this firsthand as a mail carrier, we were given orders if you feel you are in danger do NOT deliver, inform management and it will be dealt with. Safety is a priority.

He would come in and loiter and give me a gossip about other people in the neighborhood which I did not want to hear about I’m a busy entrepreneur. When I asked him to deliver to the back he got upset because of the extra effort every day he would have to do. So he told his supervisor that it was afraid to go in our backyard because the dog might be out. He’s a very difficult letter carrier to deal with, this whole neighborhood has problems with him even another litter carriers tell me what a jerk he is Ed Haller

Mail carriers are specifically trained from the get-go beginning at Academy not to approach if the door is open and they either have a dog, or you don't know if they do or not. This guy is literally doing exactly what he's supposed to do, and getting harassed for it.

I have had several dogs run up on me when I was doing deliveries. Had one so big it jumped up and put it's paws on my chest. The dog was right in my face. That's not cool I don't care how friendly you think your dog is. People are trying to do a job so people need to control their dogs.

But one things for sure, customers have turned into dangerous assholes all over the country. I’ve had a knife pulled on me over a ad magazine that everyone gets that the guy didn’t want, carriers get robbed left and right, attacked by people, mauled by dogs because people can’t possibly just put their dog inside because that dog never biting you means he’d never ever bite anyone else. Carriers getting shot while sitting in the mail van, or on someone’s porch because some psycho thinks their carrier is the only person touching that mail from start to finish and they haven’t received it yet so it must be the carriers fault. Carriers getting threatened all the time by customers, literally having to get into fights with people. A lot of us have several bad interactions with the public, I myself have had weapons pulled on me over nothing, threatened over mail that hadn’t came to me yet to even try delivering, yelled at and berated in the middle of the street as I try walking away because some lady thinks her mail should magically go to her new address, someone think it’s okay to open my vehicle door wanting something from me, and been in a fight. Multiple of my friends have had guns pulled on them. So while you may have a shitty carrier because they do exist, there are a lot more shitty customers than carriers and we’re going to be as safe as we can. For some people which might be him, that includes not going to a porch when the customer comes out recording him. And if you think that’s extreme or makes him a pussy or whatever, I’ll point you to the lady that a customer came out on the porch and shot her over his check not being delivered yet.

He didn’t like that he had to come to the back door to deliver because he used to come to the front and I didn’t like him loitering. So I asked deliver where it was supposed to be out back and this is when this bullshit started.. He now delivers out front and I come right out my door with my dog in the window, every day.

The carrier is delivering mail by the book. You don't have to like it, but you don't pay his bills. If there are 600 stops on his route, and 44% of those stops had dogs (the national average), how long would it take to get bit if he delivered the mail/parcels to those doors when they are opened? There is no way to answer that, really, but if you look at the picture, it isn't hard to see that doing so would be an unnecessary risk. This is like a guy with a blocked mailbox. He will demand that his mail needs to be delivered regardless. What he doesn't understand is, there are 30 more blocked boxes on the route at any given day. If the carrier stops, parks the truck properly, delivers the mail, gets back in and on to the next, how much time is that adding to his route? Well, it could be enough time that he misses the truck at the end of the night that picks up all the outgoing mail. He cant do that. Its a service for all not me, me, me. In order to ensure the safety of carriers and timely delivery to all, there are rules. It ain't hard to understand.

So the resident can't give the mail carrier a 30 second window to deliver the mail without opening the door? The carrier when confronted, responds "you opened your door." Clearly there is a back story this news reporter left out. USPS sometimes has to establish safety rules at certain delivery points for residents that are too obtuse to understand the situation they've created. If you own a dog, and your dog is coming out of your home or is in the yard charging/ attacking carriers trying to deliver mail or packages to your home, you need to take extra steps to prevent an incident. By the way, carriers can and will personally sue a dog/ animal owner if they get bit while doing their job.

I have a lazy, overweight mail carrier that frequently marks my larger items “undeliverable” because they won’t fit in the mailbox and she’s too lazy to get out and put them at my door, which is her job. So I then have to wait another day, then go to the post office myself to get it, and they won’t do anything about it. It’s not right.

As mailcarriers we are allowed to keep ourselves safe. We do not deliver to backyards… or to open doorways period. Animals protect their homes and see mail carriers as threatening, they bark- we leave- their behavior is reinforced. Thus, they behave differently to us than a regular visitor. It is our safety at issue. I had more than 400 to 600 stops a day to deliver. It’s expediency and we can’t walk to your backyard to deliver to your special box because you rescued a dog. I have a rescue dog at home as well who is feisty- my box is at the street.

So I’m a letter carrier and there’s way to many dog attacks that happen, there’s absolutely no need to open your door when the carrier walks up to house especially if you have an aggressive dog, just last week my fellow carrier walked up with a parcel and the guy opened the door and their dog attacked him! These delivery people can refuse to deliver to you if dog charges at them in order to cause bodily harm. They are putting their life in danger everytime they come close to your property. Even if the mail carrier is an asshole, he's not wrong to curtail the mail. You have to be careful, a dog attack can happen in a split second. You must predict scenarios that increase the chance of a dog attack, like an open door for example. Especially at a house with a known dog.

wrong, he exited once the owner came to get his mail, no dog was involved. he's always INSIDE. THE MAILMAN WAS ALSO RECORDING, which is against postal regulations..

@@meathead7254 did you watch the whole video? or did you miss the part from 1:20? or is it something you cant comprehend? clearly the mailman wants to deliver. clearly the customers just giving the mailmam a hardtime. moved the mailbox behind his house? doesnt follow "do not open door"? i dont blame the dog one bit! its the owner! its the owners responsibility. he might rescued it but he dont deserve that dog if he himself is stubborn and cant wait few seconds for the mailman to put his mail in the mailbox. recording is against postal regulation? probably! but if its for my safety? yeah i'll record every second of it. IMAGINE IF THE CUSTOMER JUST KEPT HIS DOG INSIDE AND DIDNT OPEN HIS DOOR?

@@BrUh-sj1pc sounds like you’re about as dumb as Ed the carrier. I took this video it’s mine. I came out the back door and closed it and he turned around and walked away and said because I had opened my door while he was approaching through the driveway that he should not deliver my mail and too bad. He doesn’t record anymore because it’s against your postal regulations and it probably violates by civil rights. He was warned by the post office. Now delivers out front where I greet him at the door and guess what I come out the door and my dogs inside

Sorry but this guy is clueless all he has to do is keep his door closed until the carrier delivers his mail to his box and leaves what is so hard about that. Carried mail for 25 years and I am amazed at people who think they know what their dog is going to do sorry your mail carrier does not. He meets all kinds of dogs, and he cannot assume what your dog is going to do so they have universal rules for all dogs! He is just being nasty to this guy even if he is a jerk, he has a job to do! I have the answer, but no one listened do away with these walking routes put up curbside boxes save time and money for the post office. Walking routes serve no purpose but to injure mail carriers and cost the post office millions in time!!!

We mail carrier, we got bits by dogs, they are friendly with the owner but we are a threat fir them. They need to make sure wjen we arrive dogs a restrain. Fir our own safety. We do not know if is a court issue, if we get injure by a dog. We just want to proctect ourself and the customer. We are happy to delivery their packages, in a safety matter. We do live our job, and customers. But ee will like oyr customers to proctects us from their puppies❤️ i got attact by a dog. Let me tell you is fraighten. I Love dogs, but i want make sure my delivery person person is safe from them.

I guarantee you this is not happening because of the dog. This customer did something to PISS this carrier off and carriers really DO have the power to make you go to the post office to get your mail. Don't piss off your mail carriers. You'll learn really fast how much the federal government really does not care about you getting your mail if you have done something to disrupt the process of what it takes to deliver that mail every single day. Video taping a federal employee in uniform can actually get you into trouble. It's also a good way to PISS off your mail carrier.

Like seriously, can you imagine the amount of stupidity it takes to actively antagonize someone who is vital to your business? It's essentially active self sabotage. But no, really. Actually imagine it. Say you build houses for living and that there is only one supplier of lumber. Why would you try to piss off the guy who gives you lumber?

I cant imagine being a city carrier and having a loose dog try to chase you down while carrying that heavy af satchel. Being rual is one thing with farm dogs and the ability to hide in a vehicle, but being dismounted and lugging around pounds of mail and other stuff on your shoulders all day with the added possibilty of a loose aggravated dog..... i love dogs, but theyre still animals that do animal things. Animal things that can send a well-meaning worker to the hospital

I am a retired city letter carrier of 35 years. Very early in my career I was delivering mail to a home where the door was open but the screen door was closed. I was new on the route and didn't know there were dogs, while putting mail in the box a dog charged me and busted through the screen door. Thank God I was able to get out of there without a dog bite, but it taught me a valuable lesson about open doors. From what I saw in this video this carrier was going by the book. He's obviously had trouble with this customer before. I would like to see this reporter and customer carry the route for one day, they would probably have a new outlook on the whole situation. This carrier has the authority to suspend delivery even to the whole block if he feels like he's in danger. In many cases the carrier gets in trouble for being bitten by a dog with the USPS because management sees it as a situation that could have been avoided, not in every case mind you but many cases. Also in many cases the USPS will sue the customer for medical bills and comp given to the carrier for being bit. This carrier was not only protecting himself he was also protecting the customer. My hat's off to the mailman for doing the job he's supposed to do and keeping his cool while the media and customers were harassing him.

My wife is a supervisor and you wouldn't believe how many of her carriers are badly bitten by peoples dogs that claim "their dog wouldn't bite anyone"

As a carrier, I can tell you many carriers get bitten daily and customers are extremely careless. They will open their door and let dogs out, as the dogs run up on you barking, the customer always yells, “he is friendly”.

Being cautious of random dogs is 100% legitimate! Your dog might be friendly and well behaved, but a stranger doesn't know that, they still have to be weary of being bitten, and there have been some very vicious dog attacks.

The mail carrier doesn't have to go around to the back of the house to deliver your mail. He was doing you a courtesy and you STILL opened the door while he was trying to deliver, giving your dog an opportunity to attack.

I was bitten while delivering pizza once. It wasn't a pit bull, but I totally understand the reluctance to approach a house with a pit bull. There is NO excuse to have pit bulls. .I know people say they're good and safe, but they are notorious for turning on a dime after years of being friendly. Some countries ban dogs with a bad reputation. I think the U.S. should too. At first, I thought this would be about obnoxious mail carriers. ... Now, I would have to side with the mail carrier.

I deliver packages for Amazon. A customer told me “don’t worry my dog doesn’t bite “ when seconds before the dog nipped my leg when the owner wasn’t looking.
