He was caught in a catch 22. Endanger himself to save his children or abandon his children to this insane sociopathic narcissist to save himself. He chose his child. He died for his child. She fought his custody for money - killed him for money and when she had him out of the way, she killed his children for money.

She would never have let that happen. She wanted his life insurance policy of over a million. She also wanted everything she could inherit and stood to lose that in the divorce. She was not going to let him divorce her like that. She was also going to kill his child, no way could he have stood by and let that happen even if he’d lived that long - there was no way for him to avoid this. He did everything possible in his power and he was failed by the state. If he didn’t try to fight her he would have lost his child and she knew that - she used his child to manipulate him and lure him to kill him. He couldn’t have left his autistic child alone with her, knowing she was insane. He was returning his child from his visitation when he was ambushed and shot. He couldn’t have simply refused to go - she could have claimed kidnapping by parental abduction. He couldn’t have refused visitation without endangering his rights to custody in the divorce. She literally used his child to kill him and then killed his child. For money. Lori didn’t know that Charles had transferred his life insurance out of Lori’s name and into his sister’s name. She was extremely irate about it when she called the insurance company and they told her she wasn’t getting anything. She killed both children and stole the support checks they were getting. It was not something Charles did wrong, or could have avoided.
